AT THE FIRE ISLAND PINES 
 
FIRE ISLAND, N.Y. The Fire Island Dance Festival returns to 
Fire Island Pines for a trio of outdoor party/performances 
on Saturday, July 19 and Sunday, July 20, 2008. Now in its 
14th year, FIDF is produced by and benefits Dancers 
Responding to AIDS (DRA), a program of Broadway 
Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. 
 
Performing outdoors against a backdrop of the Great South 
Bay, FIDF 14 will feature an eclectic program of classical 
and contemporary ballet, modern dance, tap and hip hop 
performed by eleven emerging and world renowned dance 
companies. World premiere dances will be presented by 
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Atlanta Ballet, Ballet 
Hispanico, Jermaine Browne, Parsons Dance, Jason Samuels 
Smith and Tony AwardÒ choreographer Jerry Mitchell for 
Rasta Thomas’ Bad Boys of Dance as well as repertory pieces 
from Jacoby & Pronk, Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, Jennifer 
Muller / The Works, and Ellis Wood Dance. 
 
Saturday’s emcee is Whoopi Goldberg, host of this year’s 
Tony AwardsÒ, moderator of ABC TV’s “The View,” and - as 
producer, actress, singer, writer and comedienne - one of 
the few individuals to have won all four of the major show 
business awards: the Oscar, the Tony, the Emmy, and the 
Grammy. Sunday’s emcee is comedy club favorite Caroline 
Rhea original host of TV’s “The Biggest Loser”. An 
accomplished actress, Rhea has had featured roles in both 
film (‘The Perfect Man,” “Man on the Moon”) and television 
(”Sabrina, The Teenage Witch,” Lifetime’s “Fat Like Me”). 
 
Dancegoers are offered a choice of show times. The opening 
performance is on Saturday, July 19 at 5:00 p.m. (party at 
4:00 p.m.). The sunset performance is on Saturday, July 19 
at 7:00 p.m. (party following). And the closing performance 
is on Sunday, July 20 at 5:00 p.m. (party following).

funds for AIDS-related service providers across the United 
States. Funds are distributed to seven programs of the 
Actors’ Fund of America and as grants to over 500 AIDS and 
family service organizations nationwide. Since its founding 
in 1988, BC/EFA has distributed over $140 million for 
critically needed services for people with AIDS, HIV, or

From 1997-1999, the great sax player Bob Kindred and I 
hosted a Jazz Tap Brunch every Sunday at a restaurant 
called Zinno. The Daily News said, "A wonderful 
conversation in rhythm as the trio and the dancers spur 
each other on." Special guests always stopped in to tap 
dance or sing. It was a fun-filled afternoon of 
improvisation and the only jazz tap brunch in the city. I'm 
so excited about this reunion. Guests include Max Pollack, 
Maurice Chestnut, Claudia Rahardjanoto, Andrew Nemr, Lynn 
Schwab and more........... Hope you can join us!!!

An eclectic musician of Armenian parentage, Armen Donelian 
has appeared internationally as a pianist, composer and 
bandleader since 1975. He has worked with such greats as 
Sonny Rollins, Mongo Santamaria, Chet Baker, Paquito 
D’Rivera, Jackie Paris, Billy Harper, Night Ark and others. 
His piano playing reveals a masterful command rooted in 
classical and jazz studies, clean articulation, a deft, 
swinging touch, access to a broad dynamic spectrum, a 
virtuosic harmonic vocabulary and a boundless source of 
creative ideas.

Joel Forrester is a contemporary two-handed piano player, 
essaying the stride, boogie woogie, and trance styles. He 
wrote the theme to NPR's "Fresh Air", studied composition 
with Thelonious Monk, co-founded the Microscopic Septet, 
and did music for the early films of Andy Warhol.

Russ Kassoff toured as pianist to Frank Sinatra from 
'80-'91, served as pianist/accompanist for Liza Minnelli

In '07 and '08, Russ appeared as a featured guest on Marian 
McPartland’s Piano Jazz on NPR. He conducts and accompanies 
Rita Moreno, performs with his Big Band THE RKBB in concert 
at the Bahai Center in NYC, and is a regular featured 
performer at The Knickerbocker (upcoming 6/26, 27, 28) in 
NYC with Jazz legend Bucky Pizzarelli!

FYI! I will be teaching a class open to anyone who's been 
itchin to try tap for the first time or itchin to get their 
shoes back on. THIS CLASS WILL BE FREE and will be held 
the Lou Conte Dance Studio... home of hubbard street dance 
on Jackson and racine in west loop chicago. My goal is to 
inspire as many people as possible to love and embrace the 
spirit of tap dance.

Each summer Linda Sohl-Ellison, founder and Artistic 
Director of Rhapsody In 
Taps, teaches a 4-day intensive tap workshop at Orange 
Coast College. This 
year the dates are Monday-Thursday, June 23--26 from 
10:00am-2pm. The fee for 
California residents for the entire 4-day workshop is only 
$10. (plus a college 
service charge of $9). Great instruction at an 
unbelievably low cost! (The 
fee for non California residents is $110.) 
 
Join Linda Sohl-Ellison for a challenging and intensive tap 
workshop designed 
for advanced and high intermediate level dancers. The 
course will include 
technique, emphasis on musicality, traveling phrases, 
repertoire excerpts from 
Rhapsody In Taps, improvisation and material by 
Sohl-Ellison's tap mentors. 
The workshop will be held in Orange Coast College's Dance 
Studio B (sprung oak 
floor) located opposite the pool in the gymnasium complex.
