Mamadêlê Newsletter: Travel to Bahia, Brazil this January!

Travel with Dendê to Salvador da Bahia, Brazil
January 13th-27th, 2010
Experience Bahia with Master Afro-Brazilian Percussionist Dendê

Spend two weeks in the festive city of Salvador, Bahia with Dendê. Your trip will include intensive percussion classes in Pelourinho, the historic center of Bahia; visits to candomble houses; participation in the Festa do Bonfim, one of the most exciting and sacred festivals in Brazil; and attending rehearsals of bands like Ilê Aiyê, Olodum and Timbalada. Traveling with Dendê will give you access to a side of Bahia that most tourists never see. If you love to drum or want to learn how, this is the way to experience Bahia.

You will take daily percussion classes with Dendê where you will learn a variety of rhythms and instruments. The classes are mixed levels so you can be a beginner all the way through advanced! Students will be given the opportunity to learn timbal, surdo, bacurinha, caixa, atabaque, caxixi , pandeiro, etc... Rhythms will includebasic candomble, samba de roda, forro, maracatu as well as popu lar rhythms from Ilê Aiyê, Timbalada and Olodum.

As a member of Timbalada, Dendê performed throughout the world from the age of 14, recorded 8 of their albums and performed with a who's who of popular Brazilian music. Now living in the US, Dendê performs with his own groups as well as many other groups throughout the US and Europe. Since his arrival in NYC, he has appeared on stage with Giovanni Hidalgo, Zakir Hussain, David Byrne, Melvin Gibbs, Vernon Reid, Adam Rudolph, Vinicius Cantuaria and many others. Dendê also teaches Afro-Brazilian percussion to adults and children in NYC.
The trip includes:

* Tons of fun events and additional classes

We have arranged a deal with our travel agent who will be happy to set up your travel and hotel!

Testimonials:

"I became at least twice as good of a drummer after I left and got my mind blown by the music and the sights and all the festivities." - Michael Colin

"As a percussionist and as a person wanting a deeper understanding of Bahia, I thought Dendê's course was remarkable and would recommend it to beginners, intermediate and advanced students. Dendê really takes care of you, helps know the real Bahia. The trip to his home, neighborhood and his mom's cooking was some of the many highlights. Dendê is also a world class master of the timbal. You will get to march in a real carnival band. It's the opportunity of a lifetime." - Bill Buchen
