WINTER TAP JAMBOREE

Feb. 28–March 1 Season Opener Features Chicago Premiere of

Award-

Winning Tap Documentary

CHICAGO—The Chicago Human Rhythm Project (CHRP ), the

world's only

year-round presenter of American tap dance and contemporary

percussive arts, opens its 19th season with its annual

Winter Tap JAMboree February 28–March 1, 2009 at the Beverly Arts

Center, 2407 W. 111th St. in Chicago. Directed by CHRP Associate

Director Martin "Tre" Dumas, the weekend features a Winter Workshop of

master classes, Leo Harris Tap Scholarship audition and the

Chicago premiere of the award-winning documentary The Wonder Kids.

Written, produced and directed by Jim Petersen and

Pamela J. Richardson, The Wonder Kids is the inspiring

story of a tiny dance studio that set out to save the art form of tap

dancing, which not only produced many of the world's greatest

dancers, but transformed the lives of thousands of inner-city kids in

the process. Narrated by legendary hoofer Dick Van Dyke and featuring

Savion Glover, Debbie Allen, Jason Samuels Smith and other tap

greats, the film earned the prestigious Grand Jury Pr

ize for Best Documentary at the New York International Film and Video Festival in 2008.

The Chicago premiere of this inspiring film takes place

Saturday, February 28 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12; proceeds benefit

CHRP's Leo Harris Tap Scholarship program.

On both Saturday and Sunday, February 28 and March 1,

CHRP will host its Winter Workshop, a series of 21 classes

at the intermediate, advanced and professional levels. Instructors

include Tony nominee and Chicago native Ted Levy, who is CHRP's

2009 Artist in Residence; CHRP Associate Director, Mayfair Academy

alumnus and Jus'LisTeN Director Martin "Tre" Dumas; Dianne "Lady Di"

Walker, who was recently named a U.S. Artists Fellow;

Idella Reed of the Sammy Dyer School of Theater and Dance; independent New

York City artist Lisa La Touche; and Ashley DeForest, formerly of

Savion Glover's company and director of DeForest Dance Academy. In

honor of African-American History Month, the instructors will focus

on the music of Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Oscar

Peterson and Miles Davis. Classes are $25 each plus a $15

registration fee. A detailed schedule and registration form are available at

chicagotap.org.

The 14th annual Leo Harris Rhythm World Scholarship

audition, which recognizes Leo's Dancewear founder Leo

Harris's contribution to the dance community and Leo's Dancewear's

generous support of tap and all forms of dance, tak es place Sunday,

March 1 from 3 to 5 p.m. JAMboree faculty will serve as judges,

awarding $15,000 in scholarships to aspiring, amateur tap artists

between the ages of 12 and 18, which they will use for classes during

CHRP's Rhythm World festival in July-August 2009. CHRP invites

members of the public to participate in a free "You Be the Judge"

event during the auditions, choosing their favorite of the

competitors. The winner will receive a $1,000 Rhythm World scholarship and a

free pair of Leo's Crescendo Pro tap shoes. The audition entry fee is

$10.

Complete rules and an entry form are available at

chicagotap.org.

CHRP's 2009 season also will include its three annual

programs: Windy City Rhythms, performances celebrating

Art; Rhythm World, the 19th summer festival of classes, master

classes, workshops and performances, July 27–August 9 at various

downtown Chicago venues; and Global Rhythms, contemporary percussive

arts performances featuring the Chicago debut of Washington

D.C.'s Step Afrika!, November 27329 at the Harris Theater for Music and

Dance in

Audition at NJPAC's Young Artist Talent Search

Actors, musicians, vocalists, dancers - we're proud to nurture the next generation of performing artists!

This year's auditions are scheduled for March 28 and 29, 2009. Applications are currently being accepted.

Each year, NJPAC identifies some of the finest young performers in the areas of vocal music, instrumental music, theater, and dance at its Young Artist Talent Search. At this annual event, students have the opportunity to audition for admission into numerous arts training programs: NJPAC's Wachovia Jazz for Teens, the Jeffrey Carollo Musi c Scholarship, the Star-Ledger Scholarship for the Performing Arts, Young Artist Institute, and Summer Youth Performance Workshop. A preliminary screening is also done for the NJPAC/New Jersey Youth Theatre Summer Musical Program.

The final application postmark deadline has been extended to March 2, 2009. Until that postmark date, the application fee is $20.

Arts Action Alert - Arts funding in Economic Recovery Package

Dear Friends

The legislative action surrounding jobs funding for the arts in the Economic Recovery Package in Congress is picking up speed, and we need you to take action! Americans for the Arts has been working with Congressional leaders to build support for this emergency funding for local and state arts organizations to prevent job losses during this recession.

House

As you recall, last week the House Appropriations Committee approved a plan that included $50 million in supplemental grants funding for the National Endowment for the Arts, and a number of other provisions that can benefit the arts. Starting tonight, and continuing tomorrow, the House will be considering the recovery legislation on the floor, and a number of votes are expected.

Senate

The Senate will be starting their debate on the bill on Friday and continuing through next week. While the Senate Appropriations Committee did not include an arts jobs funding provision in their version of the bill, advocates still have several opportunities over the next few days to change the final outcome. Amendments could be made to the Senate bill or the House arts funding provision itself could prevail in the final House/Senate conference bill.

Please take two minutes to take action and ask your Member of Congress and Senators to support the arts in this legislation. Americans for the Arts has supplied you with fresh research and key quotes that support this funding -- your help in communicating this information to your Member of Congress is critical.

Thank you for your support of the arts!
