Silent Fire Keeps it Burning Through the Holidays

It's that time of year again.

That time where we sit back and try to remember the meaning of christmas meanwhile trudging through stores and websites in search of the perfect present.

And all around us, everything has changed. The economy has fallen, we suddenly have a mixed race President and the world is in not better shape than it was when our country was created.

So what we do?

Nothing?
Everything?

Silent Fire wants to know what you think.

This holiday season, we would like to thank you for all of your dedication and support by listening to you. We want to hear your voice.

What direction has our country gone in?
And what are we going to do about it?

Email your respones to silentfireblog@yahoo.com
(Subject line: Keep it Burning! Responses can be anonymous or signed)

Your responses will be posted on Silent Fire's blog at www.silentfireproductions.com along with responses by the Silent Fire Family.

Check it out and see what your fellow Americans really think about the events of the past few months.

And on behalf of the entire Silent Fire Family, have a great holiday season and hang in there:)

Sincerely,
SFP

Support Parallel Exit!
We know the effect the economy is having on people around the world. The arts can seem expendable in times such as these. If you've seen a Parallel Exit production, you know how vital and engaging our work is, particularly to children. What you may not know, is that Parallel Exit also performs regularly in public schools throughout the five boroughs of New York City. In 2009, we are planning to expand our reach into these schools, developing performances and interactive programs that will reach students who have little or no access to the performing arts. Your support will make these programs possible, and will ensure that Parallel Exit continues our pursuit of affordable, accessible theatre for audiences of all ages.

Please consider making a donation to Parallel Exit today. Here's how:

For tax-deductible donations, you can send a check payable to The Field (our fiscal sponsor) c/o The Field, 161 Sixth Avenue, 14th floor, New York, NY, 10013. Please write "Parallel Exit" on the memo line of your check.

NEWS UPDATES & EVENTS
-----------------------------------------------------
December News from CHRP

Support CHRP in 2009 and Beyond
The economy may be Tapped Out, but Chicago Human Rhythm Project is still Tapping In with concerts and education programs throughout Chicago and we need your help as much as ever to continue this important cultural work.

Please consider making a year-end contribution to one of our "ground shaking" performance or education programs and celebrate the holidays by designating your gift to honor a person of your choice.

Here's an example of how your donation can help:
•   $50 will provide one student with SHOES at our outreach programs all over Chicago, where CHRP provides FREE after school classes.
•   $250 will support our lecture demonstration program, "We All Got Rhythm," that reaches over 10,000 children every year and teaches tolerance, American history and the diversity of rhythmic expression.
•   $500 will provide a life-changing summer scholarship for one student who will study intensively for two weeks with the world's greatest masters of tap and percussive dance at our summer festival, Rhythm World.
•   $1,000 will support the presentation of one master artist at the Winter Tap JAMboree or Windy City Rhythms.
•   $5,000 will sponsor a single concert at the world's oldest and most comprehensive festival of tap - Rhythm World - in August.
•   $10,000 will sponsor a major public presentation at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park for 10,000 people.

But wait, don't wait! If you've been thinking about making a contribution to CHRP but haven't, now is the time. The Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation will be matching 50% of every new gift, up to $5,000! That means that every new $50 gift is really worth $75, every $250 gift worth $375, and so on. This makes it the perfect time to start giving, since we only have a limited amount of time to reach our goal for the matching challenge.

Of course, if you're unable to donate, there are still many other ways to support CHRP. We are always looking for volunteers to help us with our events, particularly the summer festival. Simple tasks such as driving artists to and from the airport can be extremely difficult with such a small staff. If you'd like to join our volunteer list, simply respond to this email and say "Add me to the list."
Thank you for your continued support, and
Tappy Holidays!

URGENT E-MESSAGE
We thought we would be wishing you happy holidays , thanking you for your support, and probably a last minute reminder to donate, but following is a super short and urgent message.

LAUSD FREEZES ALL ACTIVITY FOR THE ACPN PARTNERS - PLEASE WRITE LETTERS TO SAVE THE ARTS IN OUR SCHOOLS.

Early December we began to get warnings from the Arts Education Office of the Los Angeles Unified School District that we should finish off our current work and hold on off on starting our additional schools. The process begins in May where the schools selected arts companies that are part of the Arts Community Partnership; then we are sent a list in July, and we contact them to schedule, also getting signed reservation slips, where all signatures are binding. We did this as we have been with this exemplary program, one of the best in the country, since it began, and we have worked with the LAUSD since 1980. We scheduled through June with those schools, working it into our schedule of larger performances and new work creation schedule. And we began with the first school in September.

Now we are been informed that the whole program is in jeopardy and to stop until it is resolved. And - that we might not be paid for the work we have already done. The Arts For LA web-site says it way better than this, and has a sample letter and where it should go if you click on it. This impacts so many of our schools activities, and of course the students at these schools. All the schools, by the way, wrote grants to be able to use funds received for sequential arts services. All of us in the ACPN wrote applications that showed our ability to provide this at the highest level. For years we have experienced the results, both for the students and the teachers who we help empower in the staff development sessions. It impinges on all of us. Click on the sample letter link to go there directly. These is also a petition to sign.

We will be sending out a more traditional message of the holidays, as there is much to be grateful for this year, but lets take care of this first.

Thanks for the help.

Louise Reichlin

Schools and Education

In the last three years we have worked with more than 50,000 at 65 schools in the LAUSD alone. We will leave the following link in the hope that this situation resolves. For more about our Arts Community Partnership packages and for our new Professional Development packages under SB1131 follow the links. For now the SB1131 seems to still be in tact.

Special Thanks
Special thanks to our government fundors that certainly deserve our attention. Without them (and many of you who donate to our company) we could not continue. Please go to our web site and make a donation. To see who else is helping us please see the funding page of our Fall Newsletter.

THANKS FOR READING AND RESPONDING TO OUR ALERT.

Previous E-News editions are now archived.

Please contact us if you would like more information about anything you see here or in our Fall Newsletter.

Slydology by Roger A. Reed

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yB9M3fmVBs

Here is a wonderful present....Roger Reed's Slydology that he wrote for Jimmy. You can hear him play it. He helped Rocky Mendes take care of Jimmy and Jimmy died in his arms. He always played the piano on his visits. Isn't it wonderful that we can hear him play this song that he wrote for Jimmy. Yes, Jimmy know about it and enjoyed hearing Roger play it for him. Happy Holidays everyone,
Love,
Melba
