Spike and Goldmic.com Believe in Bringing the Power Back to Hip-Hop Fans

Spike Lee’s Advertising Agency, SpikeDDB and Hip-Hop Social Network Goldmic.com Bet on the Community’s Creativity to Bring Hip-hop Back to its Roots.

New York, NY, August 17, 2008 --(PR.com)-- Some proclaimed hip-hop dead but others beg to differ. Advertising agency SpikeDDB announced a strategic partnership with grassroots hip-hop social network Goldmic.com today. As the debate over the current state of hip-hop blazes, die-hard fans and aspiring artists have turned to Goldmic.com. Riding the Web 2.0 craze and relying exclusively on word of mouth, Goldmic.com has become the new online destination where aspiring hip-hop artists promote their own beats and mix tapes, battle other MCs, upload their videos, and perpetuate the spirit of original hip-hop.

“As a long time advocate of urban culture, I fully understand the global influence hip-hop has had over the past few decades,” says Spike Lee, President and CEO, SpikeDDB. “Goldmic.com’s fearless passion for staying true to the roots of hip-hop makes them an ideal partner for us and those brands who want to ignite passion in consumers.”

“We’re looking at raw creativity here. Its user-generated content allows Goldmic.com to remain 100% unfiltered and provides marketers the opportunity to tap into the quintessential authenticity of urban youth.” says David Lemoine, Managing Partner of Goldmic.com. “We keep editorial control at its minimal, our members run the show. We like to think of Goldmic.com as an open field where tomorrow’s hip-hop talents can flourish.”

“At SpikeDDB, we’re committed to engaging customers on behalf of our clients and are always looking for new and innovative ways to touch the consumer,” adds Joel Johnson, Managing Director, SpikeDDB. “With Goldmic.com we can help brands create valuable and effective connections with a very influential audience.”

X-Dash is a semi-pro rapper from Kansas City. He has already released two albums and opened for renowned artists. He was among the first to join Goldmic.com when he realized that creating a profile was much more efficient than distributing mix tapes in the street. The social network also caught the attention of hip-hop veterans. A founding father of break dancing in the mid-1970s with The Rock Steady Crew and Electric Boogaloos, Bronx native Mr. Wiggles is among those who consider Goldmic.com a promising online venue for urban artists.

“Goldmic.com has emerged organically as the pre-eminent global online community for aspiring hip-hop artist competing for peer recognition, because we empower the hip-hop community” says Lemoine. “At this point, the stage is set for incredible growth and increased interest from advertisers. Goldmic.com boasts 82% of its members fitting the much coveted 18-34 year old demographic. We are a gold mine for brands seeking to connect with this influential consumer group”.

About Goldmic.com
Goldmic.com is a free social network dedicated to the underground world of hip-hop. Comprised of 100% user-generated content, Goldmic.com is a stage where the artist reigns supreme. Members can create and customize their profiles, connect with friends, promote their own rap songs, share their homemade mix tapes and videos. Members can also improve their free styling skills by creating crews and joining battle leagues. Goldmic.com values freedom of expression, the art of hip-hop and the opportunity of entrepreneurship. Made by hip-hop fans for hip-hop fans, Goldmic.com's ultimate goal is to nurture the next generation of artists. Grab the mic and change your future.

Remembering Eleo Pomare

From our friends at Attitude The Dancer's Magazine:
(Press Release Excerpt)
August 8, 2008
The international dance community mourns the death of Master Choreographer Eleo Pomare who passed on Friday, August 8, 2008 after an extended illness. Mr. Pomare was 70 years old.Mr. Pomare's choreographic works were a reflection of his international experiences, a broad humanistic perspective, and a commitment to social change. In a review written in The New York Times on August 4, 1991, Jennifer Dunning wrote that Mr. Pomare "carved a niche for himself over his 30 years in modern dance as a choreographer and performer with a singular gift for taut, intensely focused work." In March 1996 Mr. Pomare's Raft, a work featuring three female figures symbolizing the rape of Haiti's refugees, was performed at the Museum of Modern Art—the first time dance was shown there. Also in the nineties, Mr. Pomare choreographed Post Card From Soweto after a trip to South Africa.
Three of Mr. Pomare's outstanding works were reconstructed to document them as classics of "The Black Tradition in American Modern Dance," a project of the American Dance Festival. These pieces are: Las Desenamoradas, a work inspired by Garcia Lorca's The House of Bernarda Alba; Blues for the Jungle, Mr. Pomare's classic exploration of the black rebellions in the sixties; and Missa Luba, a dance pageant set to a Congolese version of the Catholic Mass. All three works were performed at the American Dance Festival at Duke University—Blues for the Jungle in 1989 and Missa Luba in 1990. Las Desenamoradas was performed in 1988 and most recently in June 2008 when the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company performed this powerful work to critical acclaim. In addition to maintaining his own company, the Eleo Pomare Dance Company, Mr. Pomare choreographed works for the Alvin Ailey Dance Company, the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble, the Maryland Ballet Company, the Cleo Parker-Robinson Dance Company (Denver), the Alpha and Omega Dance Company, the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, the Cincinnati Ballet, Philadanco, the National Ballet of Holland, Balletinstituttet (Oslo, Norway), the Australian Contemporary Dance Company, the Ballet Palacio das Artes (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), and the Grace Hsiao Dance Theatre of Taipei, Taiwan.
Mr. Pomare was born in Colombia, South America on October 20, 1937 and arrived in New York at the age of 10. After graduating from New York City's High School of the Performing Arts in 1953, he formed his first dance company. A John Hay Whitney Fellowship took him to Europe in 1962 where he studied, danced, choreographed and formed a second company which toured Germany, Holland, Sweden and Norway. In 1964 he returned to the United States, revived and expanded his original American dance company which has since toured throughout the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, the West Indies, Australia, Spain, and Italy. His company performed at numerous venues including: Broadway's ANTA Theatre, Washington's John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, New York's City Center, Florence Gould Hall, and the Joyce Theater, Montreal's Theatre Maisonneuve, the Adelaide Festival of Arts in Australia.

The Board of Directors of the Eleo Pomare Dance Company requests that donations be made to the Eleo Pomare Dance Company, Inc. at 325 West 16th Street, New York, NY 10011 to support the documentation of the on-going legacy of Mr. Pomare's artistic achievement.

Shoot Me While I'm Happy ~ A Tap Dance Book!

Shoot Me While I'm Happy is written by Jane Goldberg, a tap dancing
writer/story teller who approached tap with a political sense in hopes
of renewing others' interest in the art. This book, "is not a history
of tap dancing. It is one determined woman's highly personal account
of falling in love with and living the tap life". The forward is
written by Gregory Hines and for every story she tells, there's a
picture to match it!

Order your copy through www.janegoldberg.org so you can get the bonus
DVD! (If you order through Amazon, you will not receive the DVD).
There you can also find more information on the book, and
Ms.Goldberg's new projects.
