FIRE ISLAND, N.Y. The Fire Island Dance Festival returns to Fire Island Pines for a trio of outdoor party/performances on Saturday, July 19 and Sunday, July 20, 2008. Now in its 14th year, FIDF is produced by and benefits Dancers Responding to AIDS (DRA), a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

Performing outdoors against a backdrop of the Great South Bay, FIDF 14 will feature an eclectic program of classical and contemporary ballet, modern dance, tap and hip hop performed by eleven emerging and world renowned dance companies. World premiere dances will be presented by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Atlanta Ballet, Ballet Hispanico, Jermaine Browne, Parsons Dance, Jason Samuels Smith and Tony AwardÒ choreographer Jerry Mitchell for Rasta Thomas’ Bad Boys of Dance as well as repertory pieces from Jacoby & Pronk, Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, Jennifer Muller / The Works, and Ellis Wood Dance.

Saturday’s emcee is Whoopi Goldberg, host of this year’s Tony AwardsÒ, moderator of ABC TV’s “The View,” and - as producer, actress, singer, writer and comedienne - one of the few individuals to have won all four of the major show business awards: the Oscar, the Tony, the Emmy, and the Grammy. Sunday’s emcee is comedy club favorite Caroline Rhea original host of TV’s “The Biggest Loser”. An accomplished actress, Rhea has had featured roles in both film (‘The Perfect Man,” “Man on the Moon”) and television (”Sabrina, The Teenage Witch,” Lifetime’s “Fat Like Me”).

Dancegoers are offered a choice of show times. The opening performance is on Saturday, July 19 at 5:00 p.m. (party at 4:00 p.m.). The sunset performance is on Saturday, July 19 at 7:00 p.m. (party following). And the closing performance is on Sunday, July 20 at 5:00 p.m. (party following). Leadership Sponsors are included in the special kick-off celebration on Friday evening July 18h at Whyte Hall, the Fire Island Pines Community Center.

The ongoing, committed response of the American dance community to an urgent worldwide health crisis, DRA is a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA), the nation’s leading industry-based AIDS funding and grant-making organization. By drawing upon the talents, resources and generosity of the dance community, DRA raises funds for AIDS-related service providers across the United States. Funds are distributed to seven programs of the Actors’ Fund of America and as grants to over 500 AIDS and family service organizations nationwide. Since its founding in 1988, BC/EFA has distributed over $140 million for critically needed services for people with AIDS, HIV, or HIV-related illnesses.

Midsummer Night Swing continues tonight with the NY debut of Chicago's Alan Gresik Swing Shift Orchestra. On Wednesday, July 16, we present the explosive Gypsy brass band, the Boban Markovic Orkestar. Thursday, July 17 showcases the torrid tangos of the Argentinean band Orquesta Típica Imperial. On Friday, July 18, New York's underground club scene comes uptown when Swing welcomes the Budos Band, Chico Mann, and Jeannie Hopper's Liquid Sound Lounge with Jay Rodriguez. And Grammy-winner Albita brings the rhythms of her native Cuba via Miami's Little Havana to Damrosch Park on Saturday, July 19.

On Tuesday, July 22, the Harlem Renaissance Orchestra arrives with its big-band sound and special guest jazz vocalist Mary Stallings. And on Friday, July 25, Catalan rumba pioneer Peret is joined by his younger rock-'n'-roll-influenced Spanish countrymen, La Troba Kung-Fú. The Spanish Harlem Orchestra wraps up the season on Saturday, July 26.

Rumbatap at Summerstage August 1st!

Max Pollak's Rumbatap will be appearing Friday night, August 1st at 8 pm at Central Park's Summerstage. This is an expanded version of the group (with six dancers, two vocalists, three saxes and marimba), performing new material and choreography. I will be performing with Rumbatap as saxophonist, arranger and musical director.

My Octet will also be on the program, performing two numbers with Max and his group.

New Projects

NEW CD RELEASE: Michel Gentile and Tony Romano: Flesh and Steel (DT 003)
Michel (flute) and Tony (acoustic guitar) have recorded a beautiful CD of Brazilian classics and originals including bossa nova, jazz, and choro. Their interplay and unique interpretations are full of fire and imagination. CD Release date coming soon!

NEW QUARTET CD: This August I'll be recording a new quartet project with guitarist Mark McCarron, bassist Doug Largent and drummer Russ Meissner. We've been writing and rehearsing a pile of new songs and I'm really looking forward to hearing this one!

MAX POLLAK/PAUL CARLON DUO CD: Max and I had so much fun recording the two duo tracks on ROOTS PROPAGANDA that we decided to plan an entire CD of Carlon/Pollak madness. We're currently sorting through material and brainstorming ideas. Stay tuned!

is bringing a little bit of Broadway to Lake View
for one spectacular evening!

We are in search of an enchanting mosaic of singers and dancers to entertain Lake View residents and visitors at the beautiful Brixen Ivy Theater Community Center (1242 West Addison). The event, which will be held on Saturday, August 23rd, 2008, from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., was an unbelievable success last year.

Auditions will be held at the Slaymaker Gallery @ 934 W. Roscoe (Clark and Roscoe) on the following dates:
