Following last year’s sold-out inaugural season, “Dance Under the Influence” returns with a schedule packed with groundbreaking newcomers and icons of contemporary dance. Revealing the interplay between dance and other artistic disciplines, “Dance Under the Influence” provides a platform for innovators in tap, flamenco, postmodern dance, Indian classical dance, and a variety of cross-disciplinary dance forms. Each night several choreographers join together in the Theater at MAD to present works with excitement, humor, beauty, and newfound possibilities for movement, as well as to engage with the audience in a post-performance question-and-answer session. Together these elements not only showcase some of the best of today’s contemporary dance, but also explore the artistic process behind each choreographer’s creative endeavor.

EAST COAST:

CHECK YOUR BODY AT THE DOOR, a documentary on the extraordinary House dancers of New York City. Conceived in the 1980s by Sally Sommer and Archie Burnett, the film captures the golden era of the 1990s underground club scene.
Twenty years after it was first filmed at Lincoln Center, Check Your Body at the Door returns to Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater on January 31, selected to be the closing film of the “Dance on Camera Festival!” Back in 1992 when Sally Sommer and the early production team invited actual club dancers to LC’s Clark Studio Theater, it marked the first time this dancing was brought into the light and used the dancers, and House dancing, as the core of a serious well-filmed documentary. Now in 2012, we return home with a 60-minute film, honored by the prestigious co-presentation of Lincoln Center’s Film Society and Dance Films Association.

DANCERS HELPING DANCERS – a fundraising performance showcase
Trinity High School: 7574 West Division, River Forest, IL 60305
January 28, 2012 at 4:00 pm
Special Guest: M.A.D.D. Rhythms
Stairway of the Stars and Maywood Fine Arts is proud to announce Dancers Helping Dancers, a fundraising showcase. This performance will celebrate the young and rising stars of Chicago area dance and their commitment to help a dance school in need.
A year and a half ago Stairway of the Stars burned down. Even though they lost their dance space, they didn't lose their spirit. Since that time they have been dancing at a nearby church, but the dream of having their own dance space again still stands strong. "We really want a permanent home to call our own and so we are hosting a showcase to help raise money. We are dancing for our dream and 17 Chicagoland dance schools are dancing with us!' explains Heidi Renteria, Stairway of the Stars dance teacher.

Tickets sold at the door for $10.
This show will certainly show off the talent and spirit of young Chicago dancers and the community in which they have committed to help.

THE HIP TAP PROJECT PRESENTS "Entre deux chaises/a tale of two chairs"
tap dance, hip hop dance, body percussion, guitar, violin, percussion

In a universe where rhythm is the essence, the show tells the story of the encounter between seven ecclectic artists and two chairs. With humour and imagination, personalities are revealed as music and dance become the means to accept the invitation to take a seat. Communication requires the voluntary act of reaching out, and so it is, that the space between two chairs becomes the meeting ground.

ROXANE BUTTERFLY HAS BEEN APPOINTED EUROPEAN REPRESENTATIVE OF THE INTERNATIONAL TAP DANCE ASSOCIATION:
She writes:… I have recently been appointed to the role of European rep/relay for the ITA with the goal to help focus on European contemporary tap-voices and issues, to help define the particularities we share as an artistic movement, and to remedy to possible limitations created by regional insulation. In 20 years of living between the two continents (USA-Europe), I have seen Tap asserts itself more and more outside the US borders in very distinct ways, from eastern to central, northern and western Europe(s) as well as around the Mediterraneans. It is with the hope of strengthening the consciousness of such a movement, and to facilitate exchanges between the actors of the ''euro-tap-wave'', that I am taking on my task. Any issues, topic, news, questions, articles or footage related to such concerns can be addressed to info@roxanebutterfly.com. They will be relayed in a special section of the ITA.

PS : You can address them in English, Spanish, French or Catalan.
