Dance Magazine Review of Jason Samuels Smith’s A.C.G.I.
Jason Samuels Smith and A.C.G.I.
By Nancy Wozny

Jason Samuels Smith and
A.C.G.I. (Anybody Can Get It)?Ted Shawn Theatre?Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival
Becket, MA?July 22–August 2, 2009?Reviewed by Nancy Wozny

Photo by Karli Cadel, Courtesy Jacob's Pillow.

Jason Samuels Smith stands at the forefront of tap, moving the field forward through innovation, respectful of the past, but not defined by its boundaries. With one number running seamlessly into the next and no intermission, the program on July 26 delivered an hour of non-stop entertainment.
?The entire show takes place on a narrow raised platform, which makes a lot of sense considering the most charged space in tap lies between the shoe and the floor. Samuels Smith has assembled a diverse troupe of four dancers who can slice and dice that space with finesse and mind-boggling precision. Tap may be one of the few dance forms that allows individual style to show through amidst spot-on unison.
?Samuels Smith is a force to be reckoned with, dancing with such speed in some passages that all we can see is the blur of black patent leather whooshing by our eyes. Yet our ears have no trouble picking up the rapid-fire thunder emanating from his mighty shoes. Pushing into new territory, he accomplishes an ever-growing number of original steps. At times even he seems surprised by what comes out of him. Using all surfaces of his foot, he transforms the floor into the surface of a drum. His aggressive presence and virtuoso authority form the center of the show.

Lee Howard, possibly the strongest dancer next to Smith, has a laid-back style and lanky limbs that make his dancing look spontaneous and easy. Chloe Arnold, a more athletic dancer, is not afraid to let the hard work show, especially in her solo, Hernando's Hideaway. Sarah Reich adds a salsa touch to her solo Conga. Imagine a ballet dancer who switched to tap and you get Melinda Sullivan, whose floating upper body conjured a softer side in Pure Imagination.
?Accompanying the dancers were Curtis Lundy on bass, Theo Hill on piano, and Smith's father and former dancer, JoJo Smith, on percussion. Live music added rhythmic dimension, especially Lundy and Hill's lyrical touch. Father and son riffed off each other in a lively conversation between dancing and drumming in A Song for My Father, an east coast premiere. Ahmad Rashad Jr.'s poetry brought a reminder of the syncopations that speech and tap share. Smith joined Rashad in JAJA Productions Band, bringing that idea home.
?Samuels Smith's show leaves the impression that tap is a big place, where old-school competition is a driving factor, yet where there's still plenty of room for new ideas to flourish.

Christmas in July!!

Merry Christmas in (Late) July!!

Hello all!

I would like to invite everyone receiving this email to participate in our 2nd Annual Christmas Show! For those of you that are unfamiliar with our Christmas show, I will highlight the main points of what we do and what we hope to accomplish...

This show is completely free! That's right, FREE. Anyone who wishes to participate simply has to contact me... so far, we have given free group dance classes to work on a piece or two to put into the show - all classes for this show are free - all costumes are provided free of charge - all dance shoes will be provided - if transportation is an issue, we try to work it out through carpools, etc... We do our best to try to mean what we say... there are no hidden costs to participate in this show!

How else is this show FREE? There's no cost for tickets! That's right, our Christmas show is absolutely free to the public. Invite your family, your friends, your neighbors, a random person walking down the street... and there is no cost to get in, take a seat, and enjoy bringing in the season with us! We suggest a donation of money, food for CHOW, or toys for Toys for Tots - 100% of all donations go to charities in Broome County.

Last year, we worked with 5 performing arts groups to put this show together (The Dance Connection, The Fuse Dance Center, Southern Tier Gymnastics Academy, Standing Room Only, and UDAC). This year, I'd like to aim to at least double that number and increase the different kinds of performing arts showcased (last year we had dancers, vocalists, and gymnasts). Basically, each artistic organization involved brings a piece or two for the show that are not necessarily Christmas related... but are infused with meanings of hope, giving, and joy. This show is meant to be an uplifting experience for the whole family.

Want to be involved??? I hope so! We need performers, performing arts groups, sponsors, and volunteers!! I know it seems early, but we like to plan accordingly, and this year we hope to have at least 4 show dates in two different venues! As long as we can get enough sponsorship, we plan to perform at EPAC on November 28th and 29th, and at Binghamton High School on December 5th and 6th.

If you, anyone you know, or any business you know, would like to help sponsor our shows, please contact me ASAP. If you would like to volunteer throughout any part of our production, please let me know - last year we were lucky to have the Children's Dance Theatre of Binghamton University volunteer, and although they will be back again this year, we can *always* use more volunteers!

Performers and techies: Contact me if you would like to participate. If you are part of a performing arts group that would like to bring a piece into our show, we would love to have you! If you are looking to get involved in the arts - either on-stage or backstage - this is a perfect opportunity to start! We welcome all new students into our show and you will have access to the many different groups involved to decide what organization might be best for you.

In short, I hope to hear from each and every one of you that receives this e-mail and I look forward to working with you all! And, please forward this e-mail to anyone else you think might be interested. Last year we overflowed both our CHOW and Toys for Tots barrels - and we hope to continue the tradition this year!!

Best Wishes,

Susan Schneider

Count To Ten in NYMF

GTT's Original Musical, Count To Ten, Accepted as an Official Selection in 2009 New York Musical Theatre Festival

The Group Theatre Too's musical Count To Ten has reached it's next goal of becoming an official selection of The 2009 New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF). The largest annual musical theatre event in America, NYMF provides an unrivaled showcase for new musicals. To date, festival productions have led to further life on Broadway, Off-Broadway, regionally (in 38 states) and internationally (in 9 countries) for such shows as the Tony-Winning Next To Normal, Altar Boyz, [title of show] and many others. GTT’s production of Count To Ten has played over 30 performances in the past two years traveling throughout the country. Production venues included The Centenary Performing Arts Guild in New Jersey, The Johnson City Community Theatre in Tennessee, The 14th Street Theater and The Connelly Theater in New York City. The show was also featured in Dance Spirit Magazine, Stage Directions, The Journal News, Broadway World and more. The NYMF production is directed and choreographed by the show's co-creator, Michael Blevins. Christine Riley returns as musical director with orchestrations by Gabe Toth, lighting by Christopher Hoyt and sound by Paul Gregorio. Brian Duryea heads up marketing and Jeff Brelvi steps in as assistant director to Blevins. Count To Ten will run at the Theater at St. Clements in midtown Manhattan on October 15th, 16th and 17th. Alan Ruck and Sam Robards Join GTT's ALBUM
Talk Back at the Hudson Guild Theater

GTT's recent revival of Album kicked off with a star-studded opening night and a "talk back" after the performance. Alan Ruck, who performed Album in Chicago, and Sam Robards who replaced the original Cherry Lane cast in 1981, joined playwright David Rimmer, director Justin Boccitto and the cast of the 2009 GTT revival at the Hudson Guild Theater as they answered questions and spoke about the history of the play over the last thirty years. Album, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, was developed in a series of workshop productions at some of New York's most prominent theaters, including Playwrights Horizons, the WPA Theater, HB Studios and ran Off-Broadway at the Cherry Lane Theater. Divided into eight scenes, the play chronicles the coming of age of two teenaged couples during the turbulent sixties, set against the music of the times. Pictured above from left to right: Eddy Francisco, Lexie Speirs, Ryan Gregorio, Dylan Paige, Alan Ruck, Sam Robards and David Rimmer. Youl need a HUGE personality and the ability to turn a nerdy, computer geek into a casanova!!! Shooting of the episode is expected to run from the beginning of September through the end of October.

Both gigs call for 3 to 4 weeks on location. Small stipend (and travel expenses for out-of-towners). HUGE INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE!

Interviews are taking place this week and next in NYC, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee. If interested, please email your head shot/resume and why you are the perfect coach to: Deborah.Romero@mtvnmix.com. Respond quickly! And good luck!
