The 4th ANNUAL CHICAGO TAP SUMMIT
"Representing the Past, Present and Future of TAP!"
M.A.D.D. Rhythms, Inc., The Chicago Park District, The South Shore Cultural Center and Dance Chicago 2008 bring forth the 4th Annual Chicago Tap Summit November 14-16. Several of the worlds most renowned Tap Dancers will come together from New York, St. Louis and Chicago to teach, perform and celebrate the art of tap dance. This year's Summit will be dedicated to the late, great Dr. Jimmy Slyde.
Dr. James T. Godbolt, Jr., a.k.a. Jimmy Slyde, whose musicality and elegance thrilled audiences from Japan to Europe, South America and elsewhere, and whose generosity and wisdom inspired generations of dancers over a career spanning six decades, died peacefully at his home in Hanson, Massachusetts on Friday, May 16, 2008. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, on October 2, 1927, Dr. Slyde was raised in Boston, MA from around the age of three. He began playing the violin at the age of 10, and tap dancing at 12, studying at Stanley Brown's dance studio, where he met Bill "Bojangles" Robinson and other great dancers of the era. By the late 1940s he was dancing professionally, eventually teaming up with Jimmy "Sir Slyde" Mitchell as "The Slyde Brothers" and going on to dance with the big bands of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong and others.
Special guests include Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards, star of the newly released independent film "The Rise and Fall of Miss Thang", Prof. Robert L. Reed founder, producer and director of The St. Louis and Oklahoma City Tap Festivals, Vaudeville Legend Ernest "Brownie Brown" and partner Reggio "The Hoofer" McLaughlin and M.A.D.D Rhythms' own founder and artistic director Bril Barrett. Jumaane Taylor, Nora Clark, Starinah Dixon, Ja'Bowen Dixon and Donnetta Jackson round out the well-diversified faculty. Collectively the faculty credits include Broadway's Bring in the Noise Bring in the Funk, Black & Blue, national and international tours of Riverdance, the movies "TAP", "Bamboozled" and "The Cotton Club", "Star Search" and concert openings for the late great Sammy Davis Jr.
The 4th Annual Chicago Tap Summit will include an array of master classes for all levels of tap dancers, along with history sessions (complete with rare footage of some of the all time greats of tap), a participants' showcase, a panel discussion, our inaugural "LIVE THE HISTORY" lecture/demonstration which takes you through TAP history by a legend who lived it and a TAP history tour. The festival will wrap up with an electrifying concert "SOLE SURVIVORS" featuring all faculty, guests and the M.A.D.D. Rhythms family. This year's concert is a featured show within the historic and ever-so-popular Dance Chicago and is co produced by one of Hip Hop's most vibrant companies, Hip Hop ConnXion. Chicago's Detour JazFunk will provide live jazz-hiphop-R&B-Classical-Rock-Gospel music. All classes take place at the South Shore Cultural Center (7059 South Shore Drive). The performance takes place at The Athenaeum Theatre (2936 N. Southport, Chicago, IL 60657)
M.A.D.D. Rhythms is a dynamic collective of young entertainers from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, with one thing in common. A love and respect for the art of tap dance or "the dance" as we like to call it. Bril Barrett (Imagine Tap, Porgy and Bess, The Tap Dance Kid, Riverdance, Oprah and the Jenny Jones show) founded the company in 2001 and serves as business manager and artistic director as well as being one of the company's principal choreographers/dancers. Jumaane Taylor (Imagine Tap, Dance Spirit Magazine's top 20 hoofers under 20 (may 2005 issue), Grand prize winner of The Chicago Tap Off and the Bring In Da Noize Bring In Da Funk Contest, Chicago Tap All Stars, Rhythm I.S.S. and Friends) began as a protégé of first Bril, but has grown into an artist all his own. Jumaane is the Assistant Director and principal choreographer/dancer in M.A.D.D. Rhythms. Approaching our seventh full year in existence, with eight critically acclaimed concert performances, several workshops behind us and 3 successful festivals under our belt, We hope you'll join us.
PSA Unleash your rhythm and experience and learn tap dancing from world renowned hoofers at M.A.D.D. Rhythms 4th Annual Chicago Tap Summit; Nov. 14th-16th at the South Shore Cultural Center (7059 South Shore Dr. Chicago, IL 60649) and The Athenaeum Theatre (2936 N. Southport, Chicago, IL. 60657). Enjoy a weekend filled with workshops and evening events including a culminating concert entitled "SOLE SURVIVORS", Friday Nov.14th at 8pm. Rodney McMillian

October 30–December 20
Opening Reception: Thursday, October 30, 6–8pm
With a special performance at 7pm

Curated by Rashida Bumbray

Los Angeles-based artist Rodney McMillian is a painter, sculptor, performer, and video maker whose work examines the socio-political dimensions of power associated with cultural, racial, and economic issues. Using Cormac McCarthy's post-apocalyptic tale, The Road, as a point of departure, McMillian conjures up his own imagined, battered landscape by bringing together repurposed discarded furniture and historical ephemera with his own abstract, gestural paintings. The artist's desolate panorama, however, is also suggestive of a sacred chapel-like space that calls attention to the roles that so many anonymous individuals have played in history. Through such allusions, McMillian explores indirectly the slippages between traditional ideas of faith and belief associated with a church and those underlying American Romantic landscape painting that mirrored the expansionist impulses of 19th century "manifest destiny." In this way, McMillian also suggests how such historical concepts can be evident in reinvented forms today, whether in the proliferation of a religious right or in current foreign policies. The installation also features a sound piece composed by Stefan Tcherepnin and choreography by Taisha Paggett.

Exhibition Hours: Tuesday–Friday, 12-6pm; Saturday, 11–6pm, FREE

This exhibition is made possible with generous support from the Dedalus Foundation, Inc., and with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. Installation view of Rodney McMillian, "Untitled", 2008. chair, carpet and latex paint, dimensions variable. Courtesy of the artist and Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects. Originally commissioned and produced by ArtPace San Antonio.

What the Critics Are Saying About "Shoot Me While I'm Happy"

"Part memoir, part history, part anthology of absolutely indispensable interviews with the giants of tap, Jane Goldberg's Shoot Me While I'm Happy accrued a nearly-legendary stature during its long gestation. Jane, an accomplished dancer in her own right, was a major figure in boosting the tap revival and she remains a living repository of much of its lore. Her unique book is funny, moving, candid, and always illuminating. It exceeds expectations--which were large."
–Gary Giddins, author of Natural Selection and Bing Crosby: A Pocketful of Dreams
"I loved the individuation of it, the way in which it focused legitimately on self and yet was never solipsistic. It worried the material ---Gregory, Sammy, Jane. It is confident and confidential. It's trop cool…it was as if I was being ushered into a whole new world. Kind of like when I read Four Lives in the Be-Bop Business as a kid."
–Peter Guralnick, author of Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley
"The whole idea of this quest for some aesthetic resolution that in many ways has to always remain abstract is something you just don't encounter very often these days. I suspect, in part, that's because it's considered unsaleable outside the relatively small audience that would share such a quest, but I don't think that makes it less valuable. In fact, I think that makes it more valuable, or at least more durable. I'd love to hear a dialogue like that involving Mozart, or Bert Williams, or Billie Holiday. Gregory to me was in that league, and Jane Goldberg drew it from him."
–David Hinckley, New York Daily News
"From its foreword by the late Gregory Hines--one of Goldberg's staunchest friends--to the wealth of personal and historical images from the author's archives, this memoir both entertains and informs about how the great art and artists of tap dance were brought out of undeserved obscurity by Goldberg and her colleagues. This is a charming page-turner, not an academic History of Tap, and I'm sure others will have their own take on things, as Jane Goldberg--a former investigative journalist for an alternative weekly in Boston--has never been anything but forthright about her point of view and her quirks. But it's the book I want to read now. The writing is generous, funny, honest and insightful--full of good stories in which you will meet a slew of unforgettable characters, the Down-to-Earth Goddess Goldberg chief among them."
–Eva Yaa Asantewaa, InfiniteBody blog
If you're unable to come to these events, you can still buy your copy of Jane's book "Shoot Me While I'm Happy" at her website, www.janegoldberg.org.

Friends,

After many requests and much prodding Fusion Pointe Dance Studio is starting an adult tap class. This class will be a beginning level class for first timers or for those that have taken Tap but haven't done it for many years. This will be a free class and is for adults only. We are doing it for free because we want to pass on the love and tradition of the art itself. The Beginning level class will be on Fri. evenings at 8pm. This time slot will be a temporary spot for this season only and may be moved to the 7pm hour. If you are interested or know anyone that might be please contact Fusion Pointe Dance Studio at 622-0322 or at info@fusionpointedance.com

We also want let you all know that we have started working with a group of adults that have tap experience as well. We are forming a semi professional tap company for our adult clients. We are always looking for more dancers to join us, so if you tap and are interested or you know someone who is please contact Fusion Pointe Dance Studio at 622-0322 or info@fusionpointedance.com
