NOW YOU CAN TAP DANCE IN BRAZILIAN CARNAVAL 2009...

In 2008, Christiane Matallo made history when she
spearheaded the
effort to include a group of tap dancers from all over
Brazil (and me
the "Americana") in the samba school Mocidade Alegre... for
the first
time ever, a group of tap dancers were included not only as
a featured
choreographed segment, but also as part of the percussion
for the
Brazilian Carnaval Celebration in Sao Paulo, Brazil. We
were flooded
with news coverage and interest stories and it was by far
one of the
most exciting venues in which we performed in front of some
of the
largest audiences in the world!

Back by popular demand, we are trying to make it bigger
than ever by
expanding to make this an international representation of
tap dancers
worldwide...Want to Tap Dance in one of the most popular
parties on
earth in February of 2009? Then send us your contact
information with
interest to be included for the group that will be tap
dancing in Sao
Paulo for Carnival in Sao Paulo, Brazil!

A Message from DeWitt Flemming:
Hey Folks,
Many people have asked me what is involved in taking
acting classes. Many others have taken acting classes when
in reality , they wanted to study theater. There is a
difference in acting technique and theater. I teach acting
technique.Theater is an academic pursuit that involves set
design, sound, lighting, costuming and critique.
The acting techniques I developed came out of my years
of training with Stanford Meisner at The Neighborhood
Playhouse and John E. Allen at Philadelphia's Freedom
Theater. The mixture of these different cultural and
emotional differences was the basis of my approach to
teaching acting.
If you or someone you know is serious about learning
the art of acting, you should make a point to attend my
open class workshop/showcase on Aug. 9th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
at The Producers' Club Theaters, 358 W. 44th St. (44th and
9th Ave.), Manhattan. The cost is $10.
Before you spend $200-400 for a course you might not
complete, check this class out. Watch actors apply
techniques taught to make their scenes come to life with
emotion and clarity. Join in the discussion on how
character is developed. Learn the technique that former
students Erika Alexander, Michael K. Williams, Omar Evans,
Mark Webber, Ta'Rea Campbell and many others use
professionally today.
Seating is limited so e-mail to reserve a spot.

CHRP Rhythm World Review

Centerstage Show Review
Reviewer: Sharon Hoyer
Tuesday Jul 29, 2008
Monday night, the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park
shook with the beat of hundreds of stomping feet. To kick
off this year's Rhythm World Festival, the Chicago Human
Rhythm Project served up a smorgasbord of sound—a sampling
of the finest percussive talents from around the globe, all
featured this week in a series of performances at the
Loyola University Mullady Theater. The show seemed to cover
every imaginable rhythmic combination, pounded, slapped,
shuffled, beatboxed, clapped and, yes, tapped by the entire
spectrum of percussion artists—from high-energy dance and
junk percussion troupe Be the Groove to young local hoofer
Nico Rubio (who falls off the log to beatboxing by Jam
One), to the polished styling of song-and-dance man Ted
Levy—a Broadway veteran who really knows how to work the
crowd.
CHRP recently received a MacArthur grant, allowing it to
bring a group of tappers from Beijing to perform and study
with masters from around the globe. The Yan Ling Dancers
took the stage in be-tailed tuxes and huge smiles,
executing barrel rolls in the grand Hollywood tradition.
Some of the most interesting performances came from
international tappers who've adopted and preserved the
American art form. Guillem Alonso of Barcelona is one of
the last great sand-dancers; his charming shuffles and
slides were a highlight of the evening.
Rhythm World continues this week with a Tuesday night Tap
Slam and Cutting Contest, a student showcase on Thursday,
and culminating in a weekend of concert performances. Each
night features some of the greatest rhythm artists alive—a
vibrant, upbeat treat for the eyes and ears.

Orphanage Helps Abandoned Children in Bahia, Brazil
“It is much easier to assist in the growth of a child than
to fix broken men and women”
• Vo Flor, a nurse, founded Vo Flor Orphanage in 1978 to
provide children of all ages with shelter, education,
nurture and care. “Lovely Grandma” (as her name loosely
translates) started the orphanage with 13 children, without
institutional help, assisted by friends from the local
community. The orphanage fosters children at risk whether
they have lost their parents, if they’ve literally been
abandoned at the door step, or simply with day care because
parents are temporarily absent.

• In 1997, Vo Flor Orphanage was registered as a charitable
organization. It’s mission-- to re-integrate children into
society, rescue them from poverty and develop their human
potential and self-esteem to become productive citizens.
Today the orphanage cares for 56 girls and boys from
newborns to age 18. It is home to 30 of them.

The sponsors and volunteers who support the orphanage do so
not only by giving their time and material support but
mostly their hearts. You can help by bringing to the
orphanage school supplies (notebooks, pens, crayons, books,
etc.); clothes (new or gently worn); and/or a donation.
When you visit the children of Vo Flor you will be touched
and inspired by their spirit.
