VARIETY REVIEW

“Miss Thang” was recently reviewed in Variety as a
result of screening in the New York African Diaspora
Film Festival. Ronnie Scheib of Variety wrote:

"the many jazzlike, improvisatory tap numbers nicely
combine looseness with genuine professionalism…that
harks back to Bill Robinson and the Nicholas
Brothers."

CONVERGE AT UCLA'S KAUFMAN HALL

(January 18, 2008) On February 8-10, Lynn Dally, Artistic
Director, Jazz Tap Ensemble will make history again! Dally,
an adjunct professor at UCLA's Department of World Arts and
Cultures first made history as the co-founder of Jazz Tap
Ensemble, the first dance company to bring rhythm tap dance
to the concert stage with live jazz music. Now, Dally is
gathering four generations of women who are making a
difference in the world of tap dance. Women In Tap the
first ever national conference will bring together 21 tap
artists – dancers, choreographers, scholars, and writers,
and will address the contributions of these women in tap to
the renaissance of tap dance over the past 30 years. A
conference highlight is WOMEN IN TAP the THE LEGENDS, a
full evening performance featuring Dally, Brenda Bufalino,
Dianne "Lady Di" Walker, Miriam Nelson, Acia Gray, Linda
Sohl-Ellison, Heather Cornell, Michelle Dorrance, Josette
Wiggan, Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards, Chloe Arnold, Deborah
Mitchell, Terry Brock, and Barbara Duffy. Don't miss this
opportunity to see four generations of Women In Tap on
stage, at the same time, in the same place! WOMEN IN TAP
will take place on the UCLA Campus, Glorya Kaufman Hall,
February 8-10, 2008. For information on how to enroll in
the conference, go to

Evening WOMEN IN TAP Concert, go to

search box or call the UCLA Central Ticket Office at
310-825-2101.

The conference opens Friday, February 8 at noon with
keynote by Sali Ann Kreigsman (NEA, Jacob's Pillow, Dance
Heritage Society), followed by presentations on women in
the

cultural history of tap, issues of gender, race, and more
faced by women in tap. The evening will

showcase the excellent contrast of the very youngest "Next
Generation" tappers in an informal concert followed by a
screening of the award winning documentary "Been Rich All
My Life", which tells the story of the Silver Belles, women
whose careers in tap were lived in the chorus lines of the
famed Apollo Theater.

Saturday will provide panel discussions on topics including
the choreographic contribution of women to the renaissance
of tap from the 70's forward, and an oral history workshop
featuring scholar Constance Valis Hill interviewing "Lady
Di" Dianne Walker about her life on Broadway in Black and
Blue. WOMEN IN TAP the LEGENDS highlight the day and will
feature the Jazz Tap Ensemble quartet, Music Director Jerry
Kalaf.

Sunday will begin with the screening of the documentary on
Dr. Jeni Le Gon, who began her film career tap dancing with
Bill Bojangles Robinson in the 1936 all black feature,
"Hooray for Love". Final panels and dialogues will
summarize the current state of the art and point to new
directions for the future.

Master classes taught by the legends are scheduled
throughout the weekend in Kaufman Hall. A "Choreographers
Gallery", hosted by NY Tap City's Tony Waag, will share
short clips of choreographic inventions by participating
artists.

Some News: About my latest premiere of “Finding
Synaesthesia”, a collaboration with Andy Milne & Bandwidth
(Rufus Cappadocia, cello and Malika Zarra, jazz and persian
vocals), the London publication,
The Stage, said,

"Most dancers and choreographers find inspiration in music,
but not many commune with it as intensely as Canadian
tapper Heather Cornell. Cornell..... is totally at home in
this London Jazz Festival collaboration with jazz composer
Andy Milne, which sets her up as a percussionist, adding
subtle syncopations to his score. This is very much a
meeting of musical equals."

I'm developing another show with original music written for
tap with Sabine
Hasicka (tap) and Sasha Lackner (bass) from Vienna. We'll
premiere "Short
Stories" in May in Germany. Yes, the musical juices are
flowing!

Let's get together this summer and get working.
Don’t wait too long to register......
See you in New York in June!

MESSAGE: LOVE ALL OF YOU and stay truly loving, tolerant of
others that are still sinning against others while you are
trying not to, and have realize the errors of your ways.
Because when you were in sin against others, there were
people who were tolerant of you. If you have to take a
person 1 on 1, tell them their errors of their ways, but,
listen to them as well. Have forgiveness, and try not to
repeat what you hear. Passing what you hear, only passes
sin to another's ear, and then makes a person assume about
another person. Which, then, does not give the person
talked about any time to grow and change in the mind of the
person that listened to the rumor said. Watch more of a
person's walk, not their talk!! HAVE PATIENCE!! Let's start

Healing the Dancer Support Group

Dear Friends,

My name is Alice Vienneau. I am the designated social
worker heading up the new Dancers' Resource program here at
The Actors Fund. The new program is specifically geared
toward the dance community and will address the unique
situations dancers face because of the physically demanding
nature of their work coupled with the significant financial
challenges of earning a living in dance.

Attached please find a flyer with information on a support
group for injured dancers, which begins February 12th.
Below is a short description of our program. Please
contact me by email or at the number below if you are
interested in participating in this eight week group, or
want to learn more about this exciting new program.

ACTORS FUND LAUNCHES DANCERS' RESOURCE PROGRAM

The Dancers' Resource will offer seminars specifically
designed for dancers, serve as a "support system" and will
offer groups for dancers dealing with injuries or other
health concerns. The Dancers' Resource will have an online
component to link dancers' to additional resources and to
create an online community for dancers. The program will
also address mental health issues including eating
disorders, substance abuse, depression and other clinical
areas.

The Dancers' Resource program was founded by Actors Fund
Trustee Bebe Neuwirth. "Now there is somewhere dancers can
go to safely and confidentially address their unique and
complicated challenges," said Neuwirth.

The initiative grew out of Neuwirth's personal experience
as a dancer. "Last year I had hip replacement surgery,"
said Neuwirth. "It came after several years of physical
therapy, arthroscopic surgery, and excruciating pain. Add
to that the emotional stress of not being able to dance and
not wanting people to know about my condition - and I think
you understand what that prison is like. After the
replacement I recognized how extremely lucky I was to have
a great doctor and great support from the few people with
whom I shared my secret. And so I'd like to create a
support system for other dancers."

Dancers' Resource social worker Alice Vienneau, who spent
25 years on stage as a musical theatre performer before
getting her social work degree, understands the unique
challenges faced by performers. "My job is to pay attention
to the specific needs of dancers," she said. "The Dancers'
Resource will focus specifically on the needs of dancers
and offer a gateway into The Fund."

The Dancers' Resource is just one of dozens of lifesaving
programs provided by The Actors Fund. From the Al
Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic, AIDS services and the Health
Insurance Resource Center to employment training,
healthcare and housing, The Actors Fund is meeting the very
real needs of the performing arts and entertainment
community.
