Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber:
Rise of the Mojosexual Cotillion
with special guest Sparlha Swa
January 18 and 19 (Friday and Saturday), 8pm
Tickets: $10
Curated by Rashida Bumbray
Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber is a New York-based,
twenty-plus member ensemble known for improvisatory
orchestral performances that mash up all manner of vocal,
instrumental, and electronic music. Drawing from diverse
influences ranging from Billie Holiday and Morton Feldman
to Jimi Hendrix, Divine Styler, and the Bomb Squad, the
group is led by founder and conductor Greg Tate. For these
evenings, the group will perform a mojosexual-inflected
suite of trans-genre (and trance-inducing) works that are
part acid-funk, part-hip hop mixed with layers of
psychedelic grooves. The evening features performers: Rene
Akan, Maya Azucena, Mikel Banks, Paula Henderson, Asim
Barnes, Lisala Beatty, Jason DiMatteo, Abby Dobson, Justice
Dilla-X, Chris Eddleton, Avram Fefer, Trevor Holder, Jimmy
Lee, Bruce Mack, Jared Michael Nickerson, Myles Reilly,
Catherine Sikora, Josh Sinton, David Smith, Jeff Smith, and
Greg Tate.
The evenings open with a performance by emerging songwriter
and vocalist Sparlha Swa, who offers her evocatively
lyrical alternative music that is sparse, powerful, and
direct. Swa on vocals and guitar will be accompanied by
Shree Shaym (Bass), Amali Premawardhana (Cello), and Kevin
Raczka (Drums).
This program is made possible with generous support from
The Amphion Foundation, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the
Visual Arts, the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, the
Aaron Copland Fund for Music, The New York State Music
Fund, and with public funds from the New York City
Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York State
Council on the Arts, a state agency.

A message from Grant Swift:
Hey everyone,
Hope you all had a good Christmas and New Year!
Just thought I'd remind that tap classes are back on this
Saturday the 19th so hope to see you there. We are running
a revised timetable on Saturday this year so please check
it out at http://grantswift.com/melbourne_tap_classes.htm

Kids classes will no longer be on Saturday but instead will
run on Sunday at my home studio so that I can run more
classes/levels and progress them faster. These will begin
on Sunday the 27th Jan and you will need to call me on 0432
335 899 if you are interested as I am currently taking and
accommodating requests and new enrolments. Please note
there will be a limit of 6 children per class and new
students will not be taken in after the first few weeks of
classes starting as previously I have found this to
interrupt the progress of the other students who had
started at the beginning of the year.

For those living out near the Carrum Downs area, Winston
Morrison will be teaching 3 new classes on Mondays
beginning in late February at Extreme Dance Factory -
address, levels and times are on the website.

Footwork from the LA Tap Festival are still being taught by
Thomas on Saturdays (now at 3pm) so those of you who have
attended Tap Festivals and are serious about expanding your
tap knowledge, this same opportunity is happening locally
for us at the price of a regular tap class!

Addresses for all the tap classes are listed at
http://grantswift.com/melbourne_tap_classes.htm
Any questions please email tap@grantswift.com

For all Melbourne tappers, you will be glad to know that
Dizzy's Jazz Bar has reopened at another location in
Richmond so we are hoping to get some jams / tap sessions
happening there soon. I'll let you know the times and place
at a later date.

In the meantime,
...good health!!
