Tre' Dumas (former co-artistic director of M.A.D.D.
Rhythms, Imagine Tap, A.C.G.I.) presents Jus'LisTeN (Jess,
Lisa, Tre' and Nico). Earlier this year I found myself in
a position where I had to take my career in a new
direction. Fortunately, I've been blessed with an amazing
small group of independent young dancers who wanted to come
together for personal enjoyment and to allow me the chance
to let my choreographic voice be heard through their
incredible feet. For that I am truly grateful to all of
them. First off, there's my right hand and other principal
choreographer, Lisa LaTouche (founder M.A.D.D. Rhythms
Canada, founder Calgary Tap Summit, formerly of M.A.D.D.
Rhythms) next there's Jessica Chapuis (Imagine Tap, BAM)
and last, but by no means least, there's Nico Rubio
(formerly of M.A.D.D. Rhythms, Ill-Noise).

Jus'LisTeN will make it's debut with the world
premier of a new work choreographed by Tre' Dumas entitled
What Time Is It? Catch Jus'LisTeN at Dance Chicago 2007
happening at the Athenaum Theater 2900 N. Southport (Jazz
Fusion Nov.23,24&25; Best Moves Nov.30;Grand Finale

ATTENTION: Fire Department of New York City closed down
Cobi's Place
11/9

As of Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, the Fire Department of New York
City closed down Cobi's Place, due to the fact that there
are not 2
stairways out of the place, in case of an emergency.
I was not aware of this requirement, or I would never have
opened
Cobi's Place. I thought, since it was a reconverted Living
Room of an
existing apartment, it was ok to present small intimate
concerts there.
Even the elevator had been installed to accommodate the
apartment. It
was the elevator that was our downfall:Someone who comes to
our
concerts reported us 5 times to the Fire Department as
having an unsafe
elevator!
I'm very sorry about this. If you can think of a do-able
way we could
continue our events, please email me, call me at
516/922-2010, or write
me at: PO Box 395, Hicksville NY 11802.
AS OF NOV. 9, ALL EVENTS AT COBI'S PLACE ARE CANCELLED.

Dance 10 Dance Center proudly presents a Hip Hop Master
Class with
MTV?s hit show "Dance Life" star Nolan Padilla! The class
will take
place on Saturday, December 1st, at 1:00 pm. The level
will be
Intermediate/Advanced, and the class fee will be $30 per
student. The
space is limited so don?t wait and register now! Known
as one of
the hottest up and coming dancer/ choreographers in the
industry,
Nolan began his professional dance career at the age of
18. Although
dancing had been at the forefront of his whole life, it
would be
difficult for him to train in hip-hop until he moved from
the small
town of Cheyenne WY. To Denver CO. While living and
dancing in Los
Angeles, Nolan has learned the ins and outs of the
industry, and
still continues to grow as an artist. Working with the
likes of J.C.
Chasez to Jennifer Lopez and even starring on
M.T.V.?s
"Dancelife", makes his performance experience top notch.
His ability
to teach and his knowledge of Hip-Hop Dance makes class
time a very
educational and pleasant experience. Nolan hopes to
continue his
career as a Dancer and hopes to branch off into other
aspects of the
entertainment industry. Once Nolan moved to Los Angeles,
Nolan wasted
no time to go after his dream. Booking his first major
tour the
following summer on the American Idol?s live tour Nolan
knew he had
made the right decision. Soon after working with
choreographers from
the likes of Brian Friedman, Jerry Slaughter, Hi-Hat, Rich
&Tone,
Kristin Denehey, Marty Kudelka, Shane Sparks to Rosero &
Jamal, his
knowledge of performing is constantly being put to the
test with
astounding results. With representation from Clear Talent
Group one
of the top dance agencies in Los Angeles, Nolan continues
to live and
love Hip-Hop, whether a free gig, performing in an arena
or getting
funky in front of the bathroom mirror, dancing is Nolan?s
first love.
Teaching to Nolan has recently become a very great outlet
for Nolan?s
dance. "Passing on the knowledge that I have is a very
exhilarating
and exciting experience". Trying to get somebody in class
to hear
and feel the music while moving to the rhythm can be a
great
challenge at times but, Nolan?s patience and understanding
as an
instructors, make the process very enjoyable. With the
knowledge of
more than one style of hip-hop and his terminology he?s
able to break
it down to the most novice students to very advanced
students. Being
trained in Poppin„, House, Jazz Funk, Hip-Hop, Folklorico,
his style
is quite versatile. Another unique aspect of Nolan?s
classes is the
level of emotion and feeling he puts into his choreography.
Nolan
asks a lot from his students, only because he is so
passionate about
something that means so much to him. Making each class
experience a
time to let out your own emotion and feelings through
dance. "I hope
to inspire a new generation of dancers, while growing and
learning
myself. The capacity to learn is never-ending, So I hope to
share my
knowledge and love for something that means a great deal to
me, while
also learning from his students." "Just Dance" - Nolan
Padilla
This will be a great and unique opportunity to learn from
such an
outstanding dancer and instructor, so don?t miss it and

spot today! Call now (916) 851-9161 or email at

"Brilliant. Stunning. Compelling." - Los Angeles Times

The acclaimed Balinese ensemble of 26 musicians and dancers
returns as
part of UCLA Live's 07/08 Season at Royce Hall. Cudmanai's
Odalan Bali
is an exquisite synthesis of sound and motion that captures
the
exhilarating splendor and creative life force of the
Balinese temple
festival.

Shimmering polyrhythms of gamelan music and the dazzling
brilliancy of
dancers fill the stage where every movement, gesture and
musical note
is crafted and executed with emotion and energy. Cudamani's
Odalan
Bali transports the audience with its music, dance and
spectacle and
brings to life the vibrant world of the Balinese people.

From the clamor of villagers working at dawn to the calm of
prayer and
worship and from the meditative resonance of voice and
flute to the
virtuosic dances that Bali is famous for, this original
full-length
work traces the life of a ceremony from the awakening of
the ritual
site, to purification and finally to spiritual union.

This stunning theatrical narrative with bold and cutting
edge music
compositions and dance choreography illustrates how
powerful symbols
like the sacred headdress, rowdy cock fights, masks and
mythical
beasts are not just exotic objects but an integral part of
temple
ritual with their own place of honor in a Balinese temple
ceremony.

"(Cudamani) quietly rebels against the formats that
traditionally
shape folkloric performances..." there is no doubt that the
performance brought us closer to the essence of a culture
than most
touring or touristic performances ever can, making us
question and
perhaps reject the ways that non-western or pre-Western
traditions are
commonly presented on our stages."-
Lewis Segal, Los Angeles Times.

'Odalan Bali' is unlike any work ever produced or
toured-incorporating
both new and classic music/dance to theatrically convey
the principal
spiritual activity of the Balinese-the Odalan (temple
festival/ceremony).

The company is 11 years old, their membership comes from
one village
of Pengosekan Bali. Cudamani was created in part as a
response to the
effects of tourism in Bali. They perform for the Balinese
community,
for temple ceremonies, for special events. They are
concerned that
the tourist industry can undermine the artistic, spiritual,
and social
fabric of Balinese arts.

Education of village children has always been a core
objective of this
group. At this time they give free instruction to over 100
children
in the village-and their work with a female youth group
serves as a
model for other gamelan groups in Bali.

NJPAC's Victoria Theater presents:

Cookin' at the Cookery

A new production of the acclaimed blues biography
comes to NJPAC's Victoria Theater for four performances only. Cookin'
at the Cookery: The Music and Times of Alberta Hunter

Friday, November 23 - Sunday, November 25

This stirring, humorous biographical musical chronicles the life and
art of incomparable jazz and blues singer Alberta Hunter, a legendary
figure who devoted decades to the music business, then left it all to
work in anonymity as a nurse for two decades - only to return at age
82 to Chelsea's famous Cookery nightclub, where she staged one of the
most astonishing comebacks in entertainment history.

Writer-director Marion J. Caffey's Cookin' at the Cookery: The Music
and Times of Alberta Hunter is a musical recreation of a typical night
at The Cookery, when the octogenarian Hunter kept a sophisticated
Manhattan cabaret audience captivated as the overflow lined-up outside
in hopes of getting a seat. The show is also a poignant biography of
this indomitable woman, who wrote songs for Bessie Smith, worked
alongside Louis Armstrong, and gave a command performance for
President Jimmy Carter.

Now in its tenth year of performance, the original production of
Cookin' at the Cookery revived Hunter's legacy and has since
introduced new generations to the magic she created at that famous
night spot between her debut in 1977 and her death in 1984. The show
incorporates over twenty of Hunter's signature tunes, including "Handy
Man," "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out," and "My Castle's
A-Rockin'." This new production is presented at NJPAC in association
with Queens Theatre in the Park.

Hip for the Holidays with Ellington's Nutcracker
Friday, December 14 at 8:00
Duke Ellington's Nutcracker Suite translates the melodies and mood of
Tchaikovsky's holiday classic into the jazz idiom. The result is a
holiday treat as cool as it is festive - and what better way to
experience it than in the hands of trumpeter extraordinaire Wynton
Marsalis and his unrivaled Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra .

Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette & Gary Peacock
Saturday, February 2 at 8:00
No group applies the art of jazz improvisation to the Great American
Songbook like this acclaimed trio. They began playing standards
together way back in 1977, when those songs were considered passé to
most listeners. They were ahead of the pack then, and have since
immortalized their smoothsound on a series of best-selling recordings.

Duets with Chick Corea and Béla Fleck
Friday, February 15 at 8:00
This unprecedented collaboration is sure to deliver some of the
year's most mind-blowing music. One of the most prolific musicians of
his generation, Corea has bridged the gap between flamenco and jazz.
Widely regarded as the world's premier banjo player, Fleck has earned
raves for his "blue-bop" mix of jazz and bluegrass.

ANNOUNCING! (drum roll, please....)
A NEW TAPPING WITH THE MASTERS DVD

Dear Tap Friends,

I am thrilled to announce that I have a new Tapping With The Masters

"Bob Scheerer's 'The Organ Grinder's Swing' with Steve Zee"

This features a long-time friend of mine, Bob Scheerer, whose career
has spanned Hollywood, Broadway, and Television.

And let me tell you, this is one heck of a swingin' tap routine!

As with the other dvds in the series, this one is loaded with extras
including archival footage, biographies, photo montages, interviews,
and more.

For those you wishing to purchase a bunch of them, you now save:
10% when you buy 4-5 dvds, and 20% when you buy 6 or more dvds
Click to go to our shop

Again, I thank you all for your kind emails and letters of support.
You really are what keep me going and super motivated to continue this
legacy project honoring the great tap dancers of the past.

Here's one that just came in tonight:

My dear Rusty:

You Wrote: ". . .You're gonna LOVE this one!!" Oh, wow ~ you were so
right.

It's incredible -- the routine, the instruction, the demos, the
clips, the vintage clips and bloopers. No tap dancer's life is
complete without this two-disk set.

My husband, exactly the same age as Mr. Scheerer, did not want me
stop the video so I could prepare dinner! And he is not a tap dancer,
but loves the history of tap and musicals as much as I do.

Thank you for filling my life with what I love. You are one very
special lady.

Love, Ginger

Before signing off, I would also like to offer my deepest praise to
Greg Gast, who expertly and lovingly produced and edited this entire
project. He's a wonderful tap dancer himself, and he became a
"Scheerer Fan" the minute he saw Bob's work. I think you will, too.
Take a look at his Trailer, for a preview:

All my best wishes,

Tappingly,

'I Won't Dance'? Just Try and Stop Her

Richard Termine for The New York Times

Chita Rivera performing in her cabaret show on Tuesday night.
By STEPHEN HOLDEN
Published: November 8, 2007

Chita Rivera has a gleam in her eye, a smirk on her lips and a bounce
in her step. That description could, of course, be applied to scads of
other entertainers purveying resilience and optimism. But Ms. Rivera's
brand of vivacity is qualitatively different from almost everyone
else's, because it emanates from deep within her.

That gleam and that smirk are not mannerisms cultivated in a show
business charm school, real or imagined. They're expressions of an
innate joie de vivre that in Ms. Rivera's new, untitled cabaret at
Feinstein's at Loews Regency ignites a mood that can only be described
as collective happiness. You leave this show walking on air.

About that bounce: At the beginning of the program Ms. Rivera sings "I
Won't Dance," emphasizing the words "Why should I?" and "How could I?"
and humorously implying that she is far too old to kick up her heels.
Then, almost immediately, she begins to move.

No, there are no high kicks. But as Ms. Rivera struts, shimmies,
bumps, grinds, winks, rolls her eyes and, in one number, disports
herself with a top hat and cane, you realize you are in the presence
of a great vaudevillian whose discipline of her taut 74-year-old body
is so complete that her mastery seems almost casual.

Ms. Rivera's physical and emotional vitality and her mischievous sense
of fun (the gleam and the smirk suggest she has a maniacally playful
side that enjoys breaking rules) dominate her material. If her voice
is harsh and weathered, it is never less than expressive, most notably
at Tuesday's opening-night performance in a rendition of the evening's
show-stopping ballad, "Where Am I Going?" from "Sweet Charity."

Especially when singing songs by Cy Coleman and Kander and Ebb, the
sensibilities of the performer and the songwriters fuse, and Ms.
Rivera conveys a hard-boiled showbiz philosophy that might be termed
tough love with a silver lining. Her band (Carmel Dean on piano,
Michael Croiter on percussion and guitar, Jim Donica on bass) gives
the songs a requisite kick in the pants.

Late in the show Ms. Rivera takes on James Taylor's sly, witty "Secret
O' Life" and turns it into a show business anthem in the Kander and
Ebb mode. A tentatively happy reflection on living in the moment
becomes a song about always showing your best face to the world ("And
since we're only here for a while/We might as well show some style")
and viewing the rough-and-tumble ride from here to eternity as a
supremely funny cosmic joke. That's called joie de vivre.

Chita Rivera continues through Nov. 24 at Feinstein's at Loews
Regency, 540 Park Avenue, at 61st Street; (212) 339-4095.

the world, THREE MO' TENORS is taking New York City by storm!
Conceived, directed and choreographed by Marion J. Caffey, this
astonishing musical event takes audiences on a passionate musical
journey. THREE MO' TENORS stars two rotating casts of three amazingly
versatile, classically-trained Black tenors who bring down the house
with their thrilling performances and vocal pyrotechnics. This evening
produced by Willette Murphy Klausner begins with Verdi and Sondheim,
but soon the music of Motown, Ray Charles and Usher has the tenors
grooving on the stage and the audience dancing in the aisles.

"Three Mo' Tenors is a MUSICAL FEAST!
GREAT ENTERTAINMENT!"
