Miss Thang in Music City this Saturday!

The award winning HD feature, The Rise & Fall of Miss
Thang, will be screening this coming weekend as part of the
International Black Film Festival of Nashville. Miss Thang
will screen at 5:30pm on Saturday, October 6, 2007 at the
Belcourt Theater located at 2102 Belcourt Street in
Nashville, TN. The festival takes place from October 4th
through 6th and will feature films, panels, workshops, and
parties.

The film, which recently won the Motor City Film Festival
Award in Detroit, stars Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards, a world
renowned tap dancer who made history when she became the
first female performer in Savion Glover's Bring in 'Da
Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk on Broadway. Writer/Director
Stacie E. Hawkins will be attending the festival and there
will be an audience Q&A after the screening.

The African Diaspora Film Festival celebrates the richness
and
diversity of the Black experience through the presentation
of over 90
films. Filmmakers, actors, producers, writers, and
educators of
diverse ethnic groups, nationalities, and backgrounds
highlight and
discuss the multifaceted lives of people of African descent
from North
and Sub Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, North and South
America, and
Europe.

• Discover the Caribbean through films with a diverse
selection of
films from Jamaica, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Trinidad and
Tobago, Cuba,
Puerto Rico and more.

• Share valuable moments with the Festival's guests in
residence to
discuss their craft, style, and vision, offering a
meaningful
interaction between the featured artists and the audience.

discover the world of Black Portuguese Cinema and meet

Pipa virtuoso and composer Min Xiao-Fen returns to The
Kitchen with a new commissioned work, Return of the Dragon
, that interweaves diverse musical influences including
Chinese folk music, American jazz, and bluegrass. The
performance features Xiao-Fen (pipa and vocals), Okkyung
Lee (cello), and Satoshi Takeishi (percussion and
electronics).

Opening the evenings is Guillermo E. Brown, who tests the
boundaries of free jazz and hip hop in Syrup, a new
collection of electro-acoustic sonic explorations
influenced by Afro-Latin and Caribbean music. Syrup
features Brown on drums, vocals, and electronics, Shoko
Nagai (piano, keyboard, and electronics), and a guest
percussionist.

Music programs at The Kitchen are made possible with
generous support from the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable
Trust, the Aaron Copland Fund for Music, The New York State
Music Fund, and with public funds from the New York State
Council on the Arts, a state agency.

"Keeping The Tradition Alive!"

M.A.D.D. Rhythms, Inc., The Chicago Park District, The
South Shore
Cultural Center and The Harold Washington Cultural Center
bring forth
the 3rd Annual Chicago Tap Summit October 12-14. Over 10
of the
worlds most renowned Tap Dancers will come together from
New York, St.
Louis, Chicago and Canada to teach, perform and celebrate
the art of
tap dance. This year's Summit will posthumously honor
Chicago's own
Sammy Dyer. Dyer, instructor of tap and stage shows for
Muriel Abbott
and the famous Abbotteers, also produced cafe shows at the
old Sunset
Cafe, Club Morocco, and Club DeLisa, where he spent
eighteen years. In
1933 Mr. Dyer established The Sammy Dyer School of Dancing
and in 1950
created the Dyerettes, an African American female dance
troupe known
to be the only chorus act of its kind. They toured
internationally
with some of the greatest entertainers of the twentieth
century
including Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr., and Sarah Vaughn.
Special
guests include Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards, star of the newly
released
independent film "The Rise and Fall of Miss Thang", Robert
"The
Professor" Reed founder, producer and director of The St.
Louis Tap
Festival, Chicago's subway legend and tap mentor Mr. Taps,
Reggio "The
Hoofer" McLaughlin and M.A.D.D Rhythms' own founder and
artistic
director Bril Barrett. Jumaane Taylor, Lee Howard, Starinah
Dixon and
Ja'Bowen Dixon round out the well-diversified faculty.
Chicago's
explosive B-Boy crew, Stick & Move, All-female dance group,
Flawless
and HipHop supergroup, Hip Hop ConnXion, represents the
positive Hip
Hop movement. Collectively the faculty credits include
Broadway's
Bring in the Noise Bring in the Funk, Black & Blue,
national and
international tours of Riverdance, the movies "TAP",
"Bamboozled" and
"The Cotton Club", "Star Search", concert openings for the
late great
Sammy Davis Jr., and producers of the St. Louis Tap
Festival and the
Chicago Tap Summit.



The 3rd Annual Chicago Tap Summit will include an array of
master
classes for all levels of tap dancers, along with history
sessions
(complete with rare footage of some of the all time greats
of tap), a
participants' showcase & a panel discussion. The festival
will wrap
up with an electrifying concert "TAPathetically Speaking"
featuring
all faculties, guests and the M.A.D.D. Rhythms crew.
Chicago's
Detour JazFunk will provide live music. All classes take
place at the
South Shore Cultural Center (7059 South Shore Drive). The
performance
takes place at The Harold Washington Cultural Center (4701
S. Martin
Luther King Drive).


M.A.D.D. Rhythms is a dynamic collective of young people
from diverse
socioeconomic backgrounds, with one thing in common. A
love and
respect for the art of tap dance or "the dance" as we like
to call it.
Bril Barrett (Imagine Tap, Porgy and Bess, The Tap Dance
Kid,
Riverdance, Oprah and the Jenny Jones show) founded the
company in
2001 and serves as business manager and artistic director
as well as
being one of the company's principal
choreographers/dancers. Jumaane
Taylor (Imagine Tap, Dance Spirit Magazine's top 20 hoofers
under 20
(may 2005 issue), Grand prize winner of The Chicago Tap Off
and the

Bring In Da Noize Bring In Da Funk Contest, Chicago Tap All
Stars,
Rhythm I.S.S. and Friends) began as a protégé of first
Bril, but has
grown into an artist all his own. Jumaane is the Assistant
Director
and principal choreographer/dancer in M.A.D.D. Rhythms.

Brenda Bufalino teaches Int/Adv Workshop
Tap Technique & Repertory


Class will focus on: Building technique, tone, texture
speed and
clarity. Developing material in a variety of modes...swing,
bop,
latin...Musicality...learning words and melodies of
standards and
blues heads. Improvisation...improvising in multiple modes.
Conscious
improvisation leading to spontaneous composition. Trading
fours,
eights, and whole choruses. Simultaneous and collective
group
improvisation. Repertory...Ms. Bufalino will teach new
original
repertory, as well as repertory created for the American
Tap Dance
Orchestra which was founded in 1986 by master tap dancers
Brenda
Bufalino, Tony Waag, and the late Charles 'Honi' Coles.
From 1986
through 1999, the Orchestra performed in hundreds of
concert, stage,
and film projects and thrilled audiences around the world.

casual and formal presentation
explore various choreographers by analyzing a variety of
their works
through video and outside events

Class meets Wednesdays 5:00 - 6:30 at Chelsea Studios.

drop in. Students must commit through the end of the first

Dancers Responding to AIDS Health:

Hello everyone,

This is very useful information for you and every dancer you know
especially in this day of increased costs for health insurance. Our
goal at DRA is to be available to all working performers nationwide.
We are able to do this with your unwavering support. What we do
together really does make a difference.

Better Wellness and You (B'WAY) and The Actors Fund are sponsoring a
free health fair and flu shot clinic for all entertainment
professionals. The health fair and clinic will be held on Tuesday,
November 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Actors' Equity Association,
165 West 46th Street in New York.

In addition to the free flu vaccinations, the health fair will offer
blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes screenings, information on
health insurance, nutrition, and bodywork, and free mammograms for
uninsured women aged 40 and over (pre-registration required for
mammograms, call the Women's Outreach Network at 800.564.6868 for
information and to schedule an appointment).

No reservations for the Health Fair are required. Please arrive early
enough to participate as some services may be offered on a limited
basis. Program and services are subject to change. For information on
the health fair, call The Al Hirschfeld Free Clinic at 212.489.1939.
