BLOCH RELEASES EXCLUSIVE SHORT DANCE FILMS

For immediate release: Monday, 3 July 2007

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA/NEW YORK, USA: BLOCH International,
world-renowned makers of professional dance shoes and
apparel, proudly presents a stunning new series of
ground-breaking short dance films, starring a selection of
the world’s greatest contemporary dancers.

This first series of BLOCH shorts is made up of three
films, all shot on location in New York, and are available
free and exclusively on BLOCH’s redesigned website at
www.blochworld.com

Each mini-documentary concentrates on a contrasting dance
discipline and, in particular, a leading team or exponent
of that form. The films capture these remarkable artists in
full flight, highlighting not only their unique and
incredible talents, but also providing an insight into
their private lives, a glimpse into the dedication required
to stay on the cutting-edge of dance in the 21st century.

For this initial trilogy, BLOCH’s cameras focus on tap, hip
hop and ballet. The purpose of the films is to give
everyone – professional dancers, non-dancers and aspiring
young dancers alike – an understanding of what dance is
today. Each movie features awe-inspiring, innovatively-shot
dance sequences, along with exclusive interviews with the
stars.

Representing tap is the extraordinary talent of 26-year-old
New Yorker, Jason Samuels Smith, whose credits include an
Emmy and an American Choreography Award. A Broadway
professional since the age of 15, Jason talks about what it
was like growing up in Hell’s Kitchen, where wanting to be
a tap dancer wasn’t considered too manly a pursuit. As
Jason explains, he had little choice in what he would
become, because it was only through dance that he could
truly express himself. Jason’s interview is interspersed
with footage of him performing a most amazing rapid-fire
tap routine.

As far as genuine hip hop dancing goes, another of the
three films is dedicated to the celebrated New York
recording artists and street dancing crew, Amount Boyz.
Filmed on the same city streets where this most modern form
of dance first evolved, a lot of the moves these guys pull
are as much daredevil as they are dance. The crew joke
about the injuries they all regularly get – the “B-boy
scars, the stuff that comes with the territory”. But as one
of them points out, “It all starts when you’re young and
you catch that beat.”

The third film in the series has a more traditional bent,
albeit with a very modern twist. It tells the story of the
extraordinary husband and wife team of Max Beloserkovsky
and Irina Dvorovenko, principal dancers in New York. The
pair have known each other since they were 10 and
11-year-old students at the Kiev School of Dance, they were
married in 1993 when both were dancing at the Bolshoi
Ballet. The following year, they moved to America. Now in
their 30s and at the absolute peak of their art, Irina
talks about the “incredible discipline” required to remain
“gorgeous, glorious and artistic.” The piece they present
for the cameras, filmed inside a studio set high among New
York’s skyscrapers, is simply breathtaking.

These first three BLOCH shorts were filmed and directed by
the celebrated Australian music video maker, Anthony Rose
of the Sydney-based One Trick Pony Film Co. Anthony’s
credits includes over 100 video clips for many of
Australia’s leading recording artists. Production of the
BLOCH films was conceived and overseen by BLOCH’s Managing
Director, David Wilkenfeld.

Each of the BLOCH shorts runs under five minutes and can be
viewed exclusively
on BLOCH’s website at www.blochworld.com. Thirty-second
teasers of each movie will be distributed on public domain
sites such as YouTube to entice dance fans to
blochworld.com.

BLOCH was founded in Sydney in 1932 by David Wilkenfeld’s
grandfather, Jacob Bloch, and is one of the most
distinguished names in the production of dance shoes and
related apparel. To BLOCH, dancers are everything. This new
series of short films is a celebration of their artistry,
dedication and continual exploration for innovation.

Dance Review:

Tap-Tap-Tapping Out a Message of Style, Not Just Skill__
Julieta Cervantes for The New York Times_
From left, Michelle Dorrance, Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards and
Chloe_Arnold danced in "Charlie's Angels" at Tony Waag's
Tap City festival.__
By JENNIFER DUNNING__
Published: July 17, 2007__

The summer Tap City festival is always breezy, hard-dancing
fun. Tap_enthusiasts are the best kind of audience:
generous and appreciative,_including both fans and old-time
tap stars who don't happen to be_performing that night but
often join those onstage for the_infectiously spirited,
full-cast "Shim Sham Shimmy" that ends each_program. And
Tony Waag, the founder of the festival, is the most_genial
and relaxed of hosts, a slightly melancholic, blithe spirit
who_overcame the usual odds of dance presenting to end this
seventh annual_festival, which also included classes,
workshops and panel_discussions, with four sold-out
shows.__Related_Savion Glover's Objections to Festivals
Reflect a Schism in the Tap_World (June 19, 2007)__Briana
Blasko for The New York Times_Kazu Kumagai in the
festival's "Tap International" program._The "Tap Forward"
show on Friday at the Duke on 42nd Street didn't_need the
electricity of a packed house to be exciting. The program
of_dance by relatively new tappers, with a few veterans
thrown in, was_one of those "remember when" nights. Style
triumphed over mere_technique and concept here, with one
terrific act and soloist_following another, building to
mid-show standing ovations and a final_jubilant roar from
the audience.__Thursday's "Tap Internationals" program had
been heavy on technique_and concept and suggested,
dispiritingly, that the world was full of_disciples of
Savion Glover who lacked that tap star's
distinctive_exaltation. Friday's show opened with an expert
group number by the_Tap City Youth Ensemble, followed by
the feather-footed, musically_astute Margaret Morrison and
the Bay Area Dance Company. "Mr. Kicks,"_a solo performed
by DeWitt Fleming Jr., was more song than dance. And_then
the floodgates opened, with one dancer after another
pouring out_onto the stage to remind you that the styles of
the great old tap_stars — at least those who resurfaced in
the vivid 1970s tap reunions_around New York — were about
individual personality as much as dance_skills.__My
favorites were two irresistible soloists and two groups.
Michelle_Dorrance, who appeared in several numbers, looks
like the actress_Hilary Swank and dances like some of the
oddball characters Ms. Swank_tends to play. Ms. Dorrance
was an untamable, tomboyish force of_nature in "Baobabs," a
little jewel of a trio that also featured the_pianist
Matthew Chicurel and Miriam Chicurel, whose translucent
voice_sang of taming love.__Rangy, skinny and
unpredictable, Ms. Dorrance also danced in_"Charlie's
Angels," a sizzling trio of dancers choreographed by
Jason_Samuels Smith, and performed with two other exquisite
stylists,_Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards and Chloe Arnold. And
Ms. Dorrance danced as_if she knew a secret or two but
wasn't telling in an exuberant and_crisp finale with
Barbara Duffy & Company.__Parris Mann's tap world is
universes distant from that of Ms._Dorrance. Tucked into a
large velvet jacket, Mr. Mann jousted with_gravity in a
solo in "With Love to Deborah Mitchell," performed by
Ms._Mitchell's New Jersey Tap Ensemble, which should
immediately set up_shop in Manhattan.__Mr. Mann is a
showman, but he has the tap chops to back up
the_good-natured pizzazz with musically phrased volleys of
footwork_punctuated by sudden quick tilts to the floor,
ponderous yet soufflé_light, that were a surprise and a
pleasure in a time when tap seems to_have settled into
loose verticality. The piano playing of J. Leonard_Oxley
added much to the suite.__The dancing of Jason Samuels
Smith, an established star and tap force_of nature, was
another great pleasure, as was that of Karen
Callaway_Williams, a gifted traditionalist with laughing
eyes. Sarah Savelli's_well-choreographed "Summertime"
offered ample opportunity for stylish_self-expression by
four vivid soloists: Ayodele Casel, a New York_favorite,
and Michela Marino-Lerman, Carson Murphy and Ms.
Savelli.__The evening included the presentation of the Tap
City Tap Preservation_Award to Susan Goldbetter, the Hoofer
Award to Ms. Mitchell and the_"Toe-Knee" Award to Michele
Ribble for what Mr. Waag described as her_sustaining
friendship.__Thursday's "Tap International" program, also
at the Duke, nearly_drowned in extraneous elements like
saxophones and a Carmen Miranda_getup. But there were a few
highlights, including a solo by the superb_Japanese tapper
Kazu Kumagai, an exuberant number by Sharon Leahy's_Rhythm
in Shoes tap and hoedown troupe from Dayton, Ohio, and
a_wittily phrased duet, "Pa' Los Rumberos," choreographed
and danced by_Max Pollak and Chikako Iwahori.__The level of
dancing was otherwise respectable, from
performers_including Jussi Lindroos (Finland); Alexander
Ivashkevich and Anton_Merkulov (Estonia); Reco Cheng and
Ringo Yang (Taiwan); a Japanese_quartet (Takahiro
Kobayashi, Mr. Kumagai, Daisuke Omiya and Shoko_Taniguchi);
Gilberto de Syllos and a mugging Christiane
Matallo_(Brazil); Ms. Iwahori (Japan); Ms. Duffy and Andrea
DelConte (United_States); and Mr. Pollak's multinational
Rumba Tap, described in the_program as representing "the
Globe."__Both shows were considerably buoyed by musical
accompaniment provided_by Bernice Brooks (drums), Theo Hill
(piano) and Joe Fonda (bass).
