THE DANCER WITHIN by Rose Eichenbaum

“The impulse to move comes from the spirit.” — Ben Vereen

Where does the urge to dance come from? How does one cope
with the highs and lows of the artist’s life? What are the
choreographer and dancer’s responsibilities to each other,
to the audience, to the self?

These are just a few of the questions that
dancer-turned-photographer Rose Eichenbaum posed, with
camera in hand, to America’s most celebrated dancers and
choreographers.

The Dancer Within pairs Eichenbaum’s striking color action
photos and black-and-white portraits with excerpts from her
conversations with ballet icons, Broadway stars, modern
dance luminaries, Hollywood legends, and prominent
choreographers. Eichenbaum captures the character and
vitality of Debbie Allen, Jacques D’Amboise, José Greco,
Judith Jamison, Bill T. Jones, Mark Morris, Anna Sokolow,
Ethan Stiefel, Russ Tamblyn, Tommy Tune, and some 30 other
dance professionals while eliciting candid reflections on
their lives and careers. Eichenbaum is author of Masters of
Movement: Portraits of America’s Great Choreographers
(Smithsonian Books, 2004).

From the M.A.D.D. Rhythms, Inc. Newsletter

Everything you need to know about
us and what we are up to

Well, they say the third time is a charm. I hope they're
right! I tried
to get a newsletter out last month, but I didn't quite make
it. In the
picture on the left is Yoshie and me. Yoshie is a dedicated
tap student
with discipline that we could all learn from. This picture
was taken at
last summers' smash hit "Imagine Tap". In my opinion this
show marked
the official rebirth of TAP. It is my sincere hope, that
this show gets
a chance to be seen by the world. Secondly, I'd like to let
everyone
know that M.A.D.D. Rhythms will be holding a 2 week Tap
Boot Camp from
July 9-20. This Tap Boot Camp will be 4 hours a day, 5 days
a week and
will be total submersion into the world of "The Dance".
More details
will follow soon, but if you want to get a jump on
registration, let me
know and I can put you or your child's name on the list.

And as always, the weekly newsletter may not always be
weekly but it
will contain everything I want to share about M.A.D.D.
Rhythms, The Tap
Academy, Tappin' @ The Shore: The Basement Jam, The
Wreckshop Training
Crew and The Chicago Tap Summit! I hope you enjoy.

P.S. I have officially started M.A.D.D. Rhythms G.I. For
those who
don't know G.I. stands for Gary, Indiana. Look for more on
the newest
addition to the M.A.D.D. Rhythms family in the next issue!

Tap Into A Cure
Bril Barrett invited to teach and perform at Canada's
newest tap
festival. Tap Into A Cure is also a tap festival with a
Purpose! August
15 - 19, 2007

Hello Tap dancers, it is hard to believe that 8
months ago we held our first Tap Into A Cure Workshop, and
it was a
roaring success. We donated $8000 to the Stollery
Children's Hospital.
This year we are going to help the inner city children with
our
donation to the Edmonton School's Lunch Program where they
feed
children everyday with a nutritional meal that they would
otherwise go
without, even during the summer months. We have added an
extra day of
classes, from your requests, and added a participants
showcase. There
will be a tap jam, panel discussion and with our special
guest

Harold "Stumpy" Cromer, you never know what could happen.
Spending
time with Harold and hearing his many wonderful stories is
intoxicating, he is living history, and we are honoured to
share him
with you. You will have a chance to perform a piece
choreographed by
Harold in "Hoofin' for Hunger", if you attend his rep
classes. Robert
Reed, Josh Hilberman, Bril Barrett, Lance Liles, Danny
Nielsen, Logan
Miller and Andrew Merrigan will join Mr. Cromer on the
faculty.

Make your tap weekend an Alberta holiday, Edmonton is home
to the
world's largest shopping mall, West Edmonton Mall. Edmonton
is known as
Festival City, so there will always be something different
to do every
week of the summer. We are a scenic drive away from the
glorious Rocky
Mountains, Alberta is home to Drumheller, one of the
world's best
dinosaur exhibits at the Royal Tyrell Museum. Calgary, our
other
beautiful city, is 3 hours away and Banff and Jasper are
two of the
most breath taking towns on the planet. A tour of Fort
McMurray and the
oil sands plant is, too, a short drive away. Alberta is an
adventure
waiting to happen and you now can include a great tap
weekend in your
summer vacation. And remember our Canadian dollar is a
bargain on the
world market. Moms could do some back to school shopping
very cheaply
while your tapper gets a workout.

For those of you who haven't had a tap class, please join
us at
"Hoofin' for Hunger" the finale show and silent auction at
Festival
Place in Sherwood Park. I guarantee you will not be
disappointed, so
come out to the show on August 19, 2007 at 7 pm and prepare
to be
mesmerized by the talent you will see. There may even be a
few surprise
guests!

So come join us and share the weekend with amazing Tap
Masters and
faculty, who all want to share their styles, secrets and
talent with
all of you.

phone 780 722 9562

Hope to see you in Alberta in August for Tap Into A Cure.
Please pass
this email to all tappers you know, no one should miss this
great
workshop. Thanks Andrew Merrigan

United Way and Silent Fire Productions together at Leaders

Conference

Contact: Matina Banks

Phone: (571) 278-8174

Email: silentfireproductions@yahoo.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UNITED WAY OF AMERICA AND THE ARTS TOGETHER

(Pittsburgh, PA)—Tuesday, May 15th, the United Way of

America Staff Leaders Conference will begin in

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. For the first time ever,

United Way has opened up their conference to all staff

across the United States allowing for a different,

much younger dynamic (most attendees will be between

20 and 40 years old) at the conference.

To meet the needs of this new dynamic, the national

office conceptualized a multimedia performance which

is set to run halfway through the conference, on

Wednesday. Developed through the creative partnership

of L&M Productions of Alexandria, VA. and Silent Fire

Productions of New York City, this performance

includes not only dancing (provided by Silent Fire

Production’s New York based dance company) but music,

video and a voiceover (provided by L&M Productions).

“It’s a lot going on at once,” said Matina Banks,

choreographer for the project and Artistic Director of

Silent Fire Productions. “The challenge was to

incorporate the dancing into all the media being used

without the dancer being lost on stage and

overwhelming the audience with information.”

Three testimonials of personal experiences with

services provided by the United Way of America

correspond to the dance, music and video that make up

the performance. The performance is geared towards

captivating, exciting and motivating the audience

while sharing the story of how United Way fulfills its

mission to help people find answers to their problems.

United Way of America is one of many companies and

corporations who are looking for innovative ways to

inspire and educate employees during conventions and

national meetings. Todd Shanks, one of the dancers

for the performance has done two other performances

similar to this, one for Volvo, and the other for

Ford. “I like doing performances like these because

the people are excited to be there,” Shanks says.

“Because the audience is made up of employees from

United Way, they already know why they are there, they

know what they need. It’s different then performing

at a concert where you are not really sure how the

audience is going to react. In this situation they

are focused and inspired and we, as dancers, expanding

on that by giving them a visual representation of

that.”

The three day conference will be held at Pittsburgh’s

Convention Center, beginning Tuesday, May 15th and

ending Thursday, May 16th.

Hello friends!

I hope this e-mail finds you all well!

Just wanted to let y'all know that I will be appearing on
ABC's Good Morning America on Monday morning to compete in
their "Dancing with the Moms" competition. Four mothers
were selected from thousands across the country to compete
in a special live dance contest. I and three of my
colleagues will be dancing in an elimination round format
(first round - Cha-cha; second round - Swing; third round -

Take care,
Rodney Lopez
